GAME RECAP

Antonio McDyess scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Jason Kidd added 15 points, 12 assists and eight boards as the Phoenix Suns downed the Los Angeles Clippers, 104-99.

Steve Nash added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Suns, who had dropped consecutive games and avoided matching their longest losing streak of the season. Phoenix defeated Los Angeles for the third time this season and for the fifth time in the last six meetings.

Isaac Austin had 24 points and Eric Piatkowski contributed 22 for the Clippers, who have dropped 16 of their last 18 games and completed a 1-7 homestand.

"We got to help our big guys on the boards," Kidd said. "They're tied up with the Clippers' stronger front line. Austin has really made the Clippers a threat. We certainly didn't take them lightly."

Austin's jumper with 8:44 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Clippers an 89-85 lead. But Nash and Rex Chapman buried consecutive three-pointers to ignite a 13-3 surge that secured the victory.

After Chapman's three-pointer gave Phoenix a 91-89 lead, Austin made one of two foul shots. Recently acquired Dennis Scott knocked down a pair of jumpers around Austin's jumper to extend the lead to 95-92 with 5:06 to go. Danny Manning finished the run with three straight points, making it 98-92 with 3:37 left.

The Clippers were still down six in the final minute, but Rodney Rogers nailed a three-pointer and hit two foul shots to cut the deficit to 100-99 with 26 seconds to play. Kidd answered 10 seconds later with a pair of free throws and, after Darrick Martin missed a tying three-pointer, Nash sank two foul shots for the final margin.

"We didn't execute down the stretch," Austin said. "I think we got beat on the boards. They got too many shots off the offensive boards and that hurt us."

McDyess, who had averaged just 10 points in the last two games, poured in 16 in the first half, helping Phoenix to a 57-53 lead. The Suns extended their advantage to 10 early in the third, but Rogers and Lamond Murray scored eight points each in the period to bring the Clippers back. Martin's free throws with one second left in the period gave the Clippers an 80-79 advantage entering the fourth.

Mark Bryant scored 11 points and Manning and Chapman added nine apiece for the Suns, who shot 55 percent (41-of-74) from the field and held a 43-33 rebounding advantage. Phoenix overcame 18 turnovers that led to 24 points.

"The turnovers were atrocious," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "Other than that, I'm happy with the way we shot the ball, our rebounding and our overall effort."

Rogers finished with 17 points as the Clippers plcaed all five starters in double figures. But Maurice Taylor's seven points were all the Clippers got from their bench in a combined 47 minutes.
