GAME RECAP

Cedric Ceballos scored seven of his 21 points in a 13-0 run that bridged the first two quarters as the Dallas Mavericks broke a six-game losing streak with a 103-77 victory over the Washington Wizards, handing them their worst loss of the season.

The Mavericks improved to just 4-25 on the road this season, winning away from home for the second time in 11 games. They had lost five straight games to Washington.

"Wins have been very difficult for us this year," said Dallas coach Don Nelson. "When we get one, it's like winning the championship, it's special. I told them that winning is so much fun, let's do more of it. We've been working on our open court more, but tonight it just really, really opened up. Cedric was a big part of that. We were able to take advantage of a double-team tonight. We usually don't have those against us."

Rod Strickland registered 27 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Wizards, who lost for the fifth time in seven games and failed in their effort for a third straight win. The 77 points tied their season low and the 26-point loss eclipsed a 104-82 defeat to the New York Knicks on November 21st.

"This was a big-time blown opportunity for us," said Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "We played with no intensity, as if it was an automatic win for them. It was a waste. We gave no effort. This was inexcusable. Dallas played well, but every game now is critical for us."

Washington broke out to a 14-6 lead on a three-pointer by Tracy Murray with 8:16 left in the first quarter, but Dallas scored 13 of the next 17 points to take a 19-18 lead. Chris Webber, who had 17 points and 15 rebounds, hit a three-pointer to give Washington its final lead, but Ceballos took over.

Shawn Bradley started the 13-0 surge with a jumper that tied the game for the final time with 3:39 remaining in the opening period. Ceballos had a pair of buckets around a layup by A.C. Green and Bradley closed the quarter with a dunk to make it 29-21. Ceballos capped the burst 28 seconds into the second quarter with a three-pointer.

The Mavericks extended the lead to 54-39 by halftime and let the Wizards get as close at 70-59 late in the third quarter as Murray, who totaled 13 points, played sparingly due to a strained hip. The Wizards were already without forward Juwan Howard, who has a sprained left ankle.

Dallas remained in control and turned a 15-point lead into a 101-74 cushion with a 12-0 explosion, paced by Hubert Davis' seven points. Finley's dunk with 1:26 left capped the surge and gave Dallas its biggest lead.

"Yes, I was a bit surprised about the blowout," Finley said. "When we were up by 15, I kept telling the guys to keep playing tough, though."

Finley led the way with 27 points and nine assists, while Green scored a season-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Ceballos added 10 boards, while Khalid Reeves contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

"Yeah, you know we're out of the playoff hunt, unless we go on winning streak," Finley joked. "Right now, we are just playing for pride."

Bradley added 11 rebounds, though his two baskets during the 13-0 run were his only points.

Washington shot just 34 percent (28-of-82) from the field, including 5-of-17 from three-point range, while the Mavericks hit 43 percent (39-of-90) from the floor.

"I don't think that we looked past Dallas," Webber said. "No one wants to go out and play bad. We didn't represent ourselves and it's a real shame. There are no excuses. What he (Bickerstaff) said about our performance tonight is all that matters. We need to come back big time and be ready for Monday (against the Los Angeles Lakers)."
