GAME RECAP

Karl Malone scored 21 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 1:38 to go, as the Utah Jazz shut down the Houston Rockets down the stretch and won for the ninth time in 10 games, 106-100.

John Stockton collected 17 points and 14 assists for the Jazz, who erased a 14-point second-quarter deficit with a hot-shooting third quarter and beat the Rockets for the third time in as many meetings this season.

Utah held a 46-34 edge in rebounds and a 32-11 advantage in free throws. It also held Houston scoreless for the final 2:37 until Clyde Drexler made a meaningless jumper at the buzzer, ending a string of eight straight misses.

"In the second half, we got easy baskets inside because we executed like we should," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "When we didn't execute, we were shooting outside jump shots and that was what was happening in the first half. For us to win, we have to execute. We did that in the second half."

Drexler had 25 points and 10 assists and Hakeem Olajuwon added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Rockets, which has lost four of five overall and five straight to Utah since winning Game Four of the 1997 Western Conference finals.

"There's a word that I can't put in the newspaper about our treatment with the officials," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Clyde got hacked by two guys on a critical play and Hakeem got hacked as well. They shot 39 free throws to our 19 and that is just not right. I don't usually talk about that stuff but this one wasn't right."

"If some things had occurred differently, I think we could have won," Drexler said. "If I were to comment on those things, I'd get fined."

Utah took an 81-78 lead into the fourth quarter and opened a 91-85 advantage on a jumper by Shandon Anderson with 7:03 left. But Olajuwon scored seven points in a 13-6 spurt, including a five-footer that gave Houston its last lead at 98-97 with 2:37 to go.

Malone made his go-ahead jumper and Bryon Russell added a free throw for a 100-98 edge with 1:05 remaining. After a Houston miss, Stockton found Russell underneath and he arced in a short jumper for a four-point bulge with 34 seconds left.

"Down the stretch, we tell John Stockton, 'Hey, it's your team. You run it,'" Malone said. "That's what we expect him to do and that's exactly what he did today."

The Rockets missed three shots on their next possession before Stockton sealed it with two free throws with 12 seconds to play.

Matt Maloney scored all 15 of his points in the first half and Drexler added 11 as Houston led by as many as 14 points before settling for a 53-46 advantage. A three-point play by Drexler built the bulge to 60-50 with 9:50 to play in the third quarter before Utah began its comeback.

Malone scored seven points and Adam Keefe added six as the Jazz went on a 22-6 burst, taking a 72-66 lead on a basket by Malone with 3:49 left. The Jazz shot 65 percent (13-of-20) from the field and were led by Keefe, who scored 10 of his 14 points in the period.

"The difference was we started getting some easy baskets," Malone said. "Our pressure defense enabled us to get some easy baskets in transition. We wanted to make them run a bit and that helped us get the lead."

Russell had 16 points and eight rebounds and Malone pulled down nine boards for the Jazz, who shot 45 percent (34-of-75) and made 6-of-13 three-pointers. Russell was 3-of-5 from long range.

"My shot felt good, so I kept shooting it," Russell said. "I guess I was the motivator and got us started in the first half. In the third quarter, we just played phenomenal basketball."

Charles Barkley and Kevin Willis scored 10 points apiece for the Rockets, who shot 47 percent (40-of-85), including 9-of-22 from behind the arc.

"We had a good lead at the half and the next thing I knew we were down by four," Barkley said. "From then on it was a dogfight. They made the plays down the stretch and we didn't."

Houston led 24-17 after one quarter and a three-pointer by Brent Price capped an 8-0 run that expanded the lead to 32-18 with 10:11 left in the second quarter.
