GAME RECAP

Rik Smits scored 10 of his 23 points in a dominant third quarter as the Indiana Pacers rolled to their second consecutive blowout victory, 90-63 over the reeling Denver Nuggets, who suffered their 11th straight loss.

The Pacers, coming off a 124-59 victory over Portland on Friday -- the second-biggest margin of victory in NBA history -- outscored the Nuggets 26-9 in the third quarter to break open the game.

Denver's 63 points were a season low and its nine in the third quarter were the fewest by an Indiana opponent. The Nuggets' previous scoring low came in an 87-67 loss to Detroit on January 21st.

"We let them hang around in the first half and it was probably one of the best third quarters I've seen in a while," Smits said. "Our outlook is very positive. We all know what we are capable of doing as a team and these last two games reminded us of that."

Chris Mullin finished with 10 rebounds and nine points on 3-for-3 three-point shooting and Mark Jackson handed out 12 assists for the Pacers, who defeated Denver for the sixth straight time. Denver's last win against Indiana was on March 31st, 1995 at Market Square Arena.

"I thought our starters played extremely well," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "They came out in the third quarter, played great defense and helped us build on the lead."

Danny Fortson had 15 points and eight rebounds and Tony Battie 12 and seven for the Nuggets, who dropped their sixth straight road game. Denver, which is an NBA-worst 5-52, also has suffered through losing streaks of 12 and 23 games this season.

"We came out flat in the second half," Fortson said. "They are a good team and they acted like a hyena going after their prey. I try to look at our losing as a learning experience. That's the only positive you can get out of it."

Denver shot just 36 percent (28-for-77) from the field and was just 1-for-11 from three-point range. The Pacers connected on 34-of-68 shots.

Smits scored 13 points in the first half, when the Pacers opened a 46-38 lead. After scoring 10 points in the third quarter, Smits did not play in the final quarter.

Indiana extended its lead over the first six minutes of the third quarter with a 12-4 spurt. Mark Jackson opened the run with a running jumper and Smits, who contributed six points, closed it with a 12-footer, giving the Pacers a 58-42 lead.

Before the end of the third quarter, Indiana stretched its lead to 72-47 when Derrick McKey hit two free throws in the final second.

"We can play well for stretches," Denver coach Bill Hanzlik said. "But at the first sign of a run, boom, the bottom falls out. Give the Pacers credit. They toughened up their defense in the second half."

Denver never got the deficit under 23 points in the fourth quarter. Indiana's biggest lead was 90-63 on a three-pointer by Fred Hoiberg with 54 seconds left.
