GAME RECAP

Grant Hill scored 35 points and Jerome Williams had a huge fourth quarter as the Detroit Pistons held off the Dallas Mavericks and defeated them for the sixth straight time, 100-94.

Jerry Stackhouse added 20 points for the Pistons, who have swept the two-game series in each of the last three seasons and have not lost to the Mavericks since March 23rd, 1995.

Hill scored 15 points in the third quarter, when the Pistons began their decisive surge. Williams had seven of his nine points and 11 of his 14 rebounds in the final period.

"It's the little things when the games are close that keeps your team in it," Williams said. "I was out there working. I have a feel for where it comes off. Sometimes you have to pay the price to do it, but I'm willing to do that."

"The one thing he gives us, and that's one of the reasons we keep playing him off the bench, is he gives us so much energy coming into the game," Pistons coach Alvin Gentry said. "He keeps so many balls alive that we wouldn't normally get our hands on. He ended up with 14 rebounds and probably kept the ball alive on another six or seven that we wouldn't have gotten."

Cedric Ceballos and Michael Finley each scored 21 points for the Mavericks, who blew a 12-point lead and fell to 1-3 on their five-game road trip. Dallas is 4-28 on the road.

A runner by Chris Anstey, who scored a career-high 14 points, gave the Mavericks a 72-68 lead with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter. But Hill made a layup 15 seconds later and Lindsey Hunter added two free throws with 28 seconds left, sending the teams into the fourth quarter tied at 72-72. Hill scored half of Detroit's 50 points in the middle two quarters.

"We bounced back well after last night (a double-overtime loss)," Hill said. "We're all a little tired, but we got the win. I just tried to come out and play aggressively. We were down but managed to fight our way back, but we still made some boneheaded plays."

"Grant controlled the game from start to finish," Williams said. "He really took it to them and that made the rest of the team aggressive, too."

Malik Sealy and Brian Williams each made a pair of foul shots to give the Pistons a four-point lead. Jerome Williams tipped in a miss by Stackhouse before following another miss to complete a 12-0 run at 80-72 with 9:10 remaining.

"I really like that young man," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "He's getting an opportunity and he's making things happen. He's making himself a factor every night by hustling. I told him before the game I like the way he's playing."

The Mavericks closed to 82-80 on a three-pointer by Hubert Davis with 6:24 left and the teams traded points until a three-pointer by Joe Dumars gave the Pistons an 89-84 bulge with 4:16 to go.

Ceballos answered with a tip-in, but Stackhouse converted two fast-break layups off rebounds by Jerome Williams as Detroit opened a 93-86 lead with 2:26 remaining.

"We just have to finish," ceballos said. "We competed the whole game, but we didn't have a great fourth quater. We have to do more of the little things. We just have to pick it up one more level."

Hunter scored 10 points and Dumars added eight and seven assists for the Pistons, who shot 45.5 percent (35-of-77) from the field and held a 48-32 rebounding edge. Hill was 12-of-20 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds.

"We don't like to play without him, but we want to try to give him as much rest as possible so that he can finish the game," Gentry said. "We did a great job when he was out of there."

"He was definitely a problem for us tonight," Nelson said. "We had to double-team him, then they hit some open threes and they opened it up for them."

Khalid Reeves scored 12 points and Davis added 10 for the Mavs, who shot 44 percent (32-of-73) and made 24-of-27 free throws. Ceballos was 17-of-18 from the line.

"The Pistons don't have anyone on their team who can really block shots and my outside shooting wasn't there," Ceballos said. "So I just tried to take it to the basket tonight."

Finley scored 11 points and Reeves added nine as the Mavericks opened a 29-22 lead after one quarter. A jumper by Anstey gave Dallas its largest advantage at 42-30 with 6:31 to play in the first half, but Hill's 10 second-quarter points allowed Detroit to close to 47-42 at halftime.
