GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan scored 30 points and Dennis Rodman grabbed 17 rebounds, leading the Chicago Bulls to their 10th win in 11 games, 118-90 over the struggling Denver Nuggets, who suffered their 12th straight loss.

Ron Harper also had 13 points and Toni Kukoc added 10 assists for Chicago, which improved to 28-3 at home and beat Denver for the fifth straight time. The Bulls handed the Nuggets their worst home loss ever on February 2nd, 111-72.

The Bulls remained two games ahead of Indiana for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

"These are the type of games that you have to go out and do your job," Jordan said. "These are the games we need to show the difference between us and other teams. We have to take care of business when we have to.

"Denver came out with a lot of intensity and did not have anything to lose. They fought hard for the first 2 1/2 quarters. Our strength overtook them in the third quarter and we basically took over the rest of the game."

Danny Fortson scored a career-high 26 points and had eight rebounds off the bench and LaPhonso Ellis added 20 and nine for the Nuggets (5-54), who have matched their season-opening 12-game skid. Denver's longest losing streak of the season was an NBA record-tying 23 games from December 9th-January 23rd.

Chicago shot 51 percent (45-for-88) from the field, including 8-for-16 from three-point range, and outrebounded the Nuggets, 50-35. Denver shot just 37 percent (32-for-86) from the field.

"The better team just stepped up," Denver coach Bill Hanzlik said. "They cranked up their defense in the second half and then just pulled away. I think maybe they took us a little lightly in the first half but they can plug the right buttons when they have to and step it up to win."

The Nuggets took their last lead at the 6:41 mark of the first quarter, after Bryant Stith hit a fastbreak layup to make it 12-11. Eleven seconds later, Jordan connected on a 22-footer to put the Bulls ahead to stay. Jordan and Pippen finished the quarter with 13 points each and Rodman had nine boards.

A three-pointer by Pippen on the fast break increased the Bulls' lead to 42-30 at 9:43 of the second quarter, but an 11-2 burst pulled the Nuggets within 44-41. Jordan's basket with 57 seconds left in the half made it 59-51, but Denver responded again, cutting the deficit to 59-56 at halftime after a three-pointer from Ellis and two free throws by Anthony Goldwire.

After Chicago scored the first nine points of the third quarter, a jumper by Fortson -- who had 10 points during the quarter -- pulled the Nuggets back within 77-74 with 2:53 left. But Denver did not score for the rest of the quarter while the Bulls put up eight points, extending to an 85-74 lead on a layup by Dickey Simpkins.

"It all comes down to winning," Fortson said. "We haven't and that's the story of the season. I'm playing against Dennis Rodman and I think I frustrated him. It was all in fun though. I read his book and have learned how to cheat. Well, at least I have a few little tricks."

The closest Denver got in the fourth quarter was 85-78, after a fastbreak layup by Johnny Newman in the opening minute. Chicago put the game away with an 18-2 burst, with Jud Buechler's three-pointer starting it and Scott Burrell's three-pointer ending it and giving the Bulls a 103-80 lead. Chicago's edge grew to as many as 118-89 down the stretch on a jumper by Bill Wennington in the final minute.

"We weren't totally pleased with the way we played," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. "Our defense was rather porous in the middle of the game. It was a high energy game getting up and down the court. We played a pretty free and loose ballgame."
