GAME RECAP

Nick Anderson shook off the flu to score 31 points and Derek Harper added 16 while shutting down All-Star Gary Payton as the Orlando Magic posted a 96-83 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics, who had a five-game winning streak stopped.

Anderson, who sat out the last two games -- both losses -- and was questionable tonight, made 13-of-19 shots, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out five assists.

"They tried a different variety of guys (to defend me)," said Anderson. "It was just what I wanted. I had my mind made up to make something happen for me and my teammates."

"Nick is playing obviously with a lot of confidence," Harper said. "He's been our offense. Basically, he's been go-to-guy in our offense. When a guy is playing the way he's been playing offensively. it allows you to run your offense through that guy."

Harper and Anderson combined to shoot 20-of-31 from the floor while holding Seattle's backcourt tandem of Payton and Hersey Hawkins to a combined 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting.

"I don't think he (Payton) was ever able to get in sync," said Harper. "Gary, I think, didn't get a lot of good looks early in the game because our defense was pretty good."

The Magic, who led most of the way, opened a 54-42 halftime lead with a 14-4 burst over the last 4 1/2 minutes of the second quarter. Derek Strong, who netted 17 points, led the decisive surge with five.

Seattle, which shot an uncharacteristic 43 percent (33-of-76) from the floor and was outrebounded 45-32, also had a four-game road winning streak halted. The SuperSonics were coming off an overtime win at Miami on Tuesday.

Hawkins finished with 11 points and Payton six on 3-of-9 shooting. Payton, who missed all three three-point attempts, did not go to the line.

Strong did his damage off the bench, pulling down 10 rebounds for the Magic, which has won five of its last six home contests. Bo Outlaw had 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocks and Horace Grant added 10 points and 11 rebounds as Orlando posted just its second win in its last eight meetings with Seattle.

Anderson scored 11 points in the first quarter as the Magic forged a 29-19 advantage. Seattle fought back and pulled within 40-38 on a three-pointer by Hawkins with 4:37 to go in the second quarter, but Strong answered with a lay-in to start the run.

"I think the start was crucial to our energy," said Seattle coach George Karl. "We gave them a lot of confidence. Anderson and Harper played super in the first half."

Harper, who scored the final bucket of the first half just before intermission, scored the first two of the third quarter to stake the Magic to a 58-42 cushion.

After Vin Baker, who led Seattle with 14 points, made it 61-49 with a pair of free throws with 7:34 left, Orlando put away the game with a 10-2 run. Anderson capped the surge with a basket at the 3:52 mark, giving the Magic a 71-51 bulge. Seattle was held without a point for four minutes during the run.

The Magic shot only 64 percent (21-of-33) from the line but more than doubled the output of the Sonics, who hit 10-of-11.
