GAME RECAP

Calbert Cheaney scored 27 points and Chris Webber added 26, helping the Washington Wizards end the New York Knicks' three-game winning streak with a 103-90 victory.

The Wizards jumped out to a 60-37 lead at the end of the first half, much the same way they did on January 5th at New York. In that game, Washington led 60-43 at halftime en route to a 113-106 win.

"I'm playing hard and with confidence," Cheaney said. "I want the ball. I want to make a difference. Each game my confidence is getting higher, and that makes the game easier for me. We're hungry for the postseason and the only way to get there is to play hard."

The Wizards, who turned 17 New York turnovers into 24 points, sank 24-of-28 free throws. They entered the game shooting 70 percent from the field, fifth-worst in the league.

Rod Strickland added 21 points and 10 assists and Ben Wallace grabbed 10 rebounds for the Wizards, who have won two in a row and four of their last five games.

Larry Johnson scored 19 points, Charlie Ward added 18 and Charles Oakley grabbed 12 rebounds for the Knicks, who lost for just the third time in 12 games since the All-Star break.

New York, which won 104-82 in its last visit to USAir Arena on November 21st, has lost the last two meetings with Washington after winning 27 of the previous 29.

"We had poor resiliency and poor transition tonight," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We did not have a lot of energy. I wasn't very happy with the shots we took tonight. They converted on our mistakes, which we can't let happen. Washington will be in the top eight (for the playoffs)."

After a layup by Oakley earned the Knicks a 14-14 tie, Washington surged ahead with a 16-4 burst to close out the quarter, giving the Wizards the lead for good. A layup by Strickland, who contributed seven points, opened the spurt and a basket by Chris Whitney closed it with 16 seconds remaining, moving Washington ahead, 30-18.

New York cut the deficit to 34-29 when John Starks hit a three-pointer, but the Wizards extended their lead by responding with a 7-0 spurt. Jumpers by Webber and Strickland and a three-pointer by Tracy Murray put the Wizards ahead, 41-29.

A layup by Allan Houston, who scored 13 points, made it 41-31, but the Wizards then ripped off a 19-6 burst to open a commanding margin. Cheaney's 10 points and Webber's eight fueled the spurt, with a three-pointer by Cheaney with 35 seconds remaining in the half opening a 60-37 advantage.

"We took advantage of what they gave us tonight," Webber said. "Our guards won this game for us. They came back hard but we came back even harder, especially with our defense.

"Beating the Lakers and Knicks feels good. They're both playoff teams. We have to get to the point where we expect to win."

Ward scored 11 points in the third quarter to help the Knicks pull within 75-68.

With 8:55 remaining, a jumper by Oakley pulled New York within 83-76, but Washington gradually built its lead to as much as 98-83 with 2:56 left on a three-pointer by Murray.

"We played with no discipline," Houston said. "It's hard to make up a deficit like that. We did have a slim chance, but we didn't do it. We need to start to playing more consistently."

Washington beat New York 41-39 off the boards, but the Knicks outshot the Wizards, 47 percent (40-for-85) to 42 percent (31-for-74).

The Knicks took their last lead of the game when Johnson hit a layup at the 5:22 mark of the first quarter to make it 12-10.
