GAME RECAP

Clifford Robinson scored 22 points and Antonio McDyess added 20, lifting the hot-shooting Phoenix Suns to a 102-93 victory over the Detroit Pistons, who have lost 10 of their last 11 road games.

The Suns shot 53 percent (39-for-73) from the field -- despite the absence of Rex Chapman, who sat out with a sore right ankle and foot -- while holding the Pistons to 41 percent (31-for-75). Robinson shot 8-of-14, McDyess was 9-of-13 and Kevin Johnson, who had 19 points and a season-high 10 assists, was 8-of-13 from the field.

"I just want to find ways we can win games," said Johnson, who missed 30 games following surgery on his right knee. "If there's one person I know we have to make happy, it's Jason Kidd. So when he was passing me the ball in the first half, I figured I'd have to do a Rex Chapman impersonation and hit a couple of jumpers.

"It was a good game for us. I don't think we played great but it was a step in the right direction."

Kidd added 12 assists and McDyess grabbed 10 boards as the Suns outrebounded the Pistons, 41-32. Phoenix, coming off a 1-3 road trip, had lost four of its previous five games.

Joe Dumars scored 20 points and Brian Williams 18 for Detroit, which has dropped three straight on the road.

Pistons All-Star forward Grant Hill hit just 5-of-14 shots and finished with 11 points. Jerry Stackhouse scored 12 of his 14 points in the second quarter.

"I thought we played a good game, we competed," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "We did everything we had to to win, but when you play Phoenix they have a ton of offensive players. At any time anybody can score. That's basically what happened tonight."

The Suns took a 49-48 lead at halftime as Johnson scored 12 points.

With just over five minutes left in the third quarter, Rick Mahorn scored his only points of the game on a layup, giving Detroit a 64-61 lead. Phoenix answered with a 16-3 run over the rest of the period, opening a 77-67 advantage.

Robinson began the spurt with a three-pointer and a fastbreak layup by Johnson with 1.6 seconds left in the quarter closed it out. Johnson had seven points and handed out three assists during the burst, including two on alley-oop plays that led to thundering dunks by McDyess.

"We were running when we had opportunities, but at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth they ran up about 10 quick points and it was pretty much the game right there," Hill said. "With me, Joe (Dumars) and Brian (Williams) sitting on the bench in the last few minutes of the third quarter, that's when they really came out and attacked us."

Williams went to the line 19 seconds into the fourth quarter and hit a pair of free throws, pulling the Pistons within 77-69, but the Suns responded with an 8-1 spurt to move ahead, 85-70.

Danny Manning, who had 11 points off the bench, started it off with a three-point play, Steve Nash added a three-pointer and Hot Rod Williams capped it with a pair of free throws.

Detroit reduced the margin to eight twice the rest of the way, the last time on a three-pointer by Steve Henson inside the final minute to make it 99-91.

"I thought our defensive effort was fantastic," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "We shot the ball better than we have been shooting from the outside. I thought Danny Manning came off the bench and gave us a big lift offensively."

The Pistons used an 8-0 spurt in the second quarter to move out to a 44-37 lead. A driving dunk by Stackhouse capped the burst with 3:40 left in the half. The Suns outscored Detroit, 12-4, the rest of the quarter to take the lead at the break. A tip-in by Robinson wrapped up the Phoenix rally with 3.4 seconds remaining, making it 49-48.
