GAME RECAP

Shaquille O'Neal scored nine of his 32 points in a decisive 20-4 third-quarter run that lifted the Los Angeles Lakers to a 96-89 victory over the slumping Detroit Pistons.

O'Neal, who has led the Lakers in scoring in nine straight games and 14 of the last 15 contests, added 13 rebounds as Los Angeles won its third straight at home following a 3-3 road trip. The Lakers are 3-0 since rumors surfaced early in the week that coach Del Harris' job could be in jeopardy.

"Shaq was hurting with the toe," added Harris. "It was tough for him at halftime but he realized that it was going to be a tough ballgame. He just totally dominated the second half. I really felt good about our second half. The guys really came to life."

O'Neal has been playing with an ingrown toenail that limited him to four rebounds in Friday's 91-84 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

"I'll have one of my dogs lick it and I'll be OK," said O'Neal, who had 12 points in the first half, before erupting for 13 points in the third quarter and 20 in the second half.

"If I can walk around on it, then I can play," said O'Neal. "I've been playing with these small injuries all year. I'm tired of sitting out 20 games. All I want to do is play until I retire and then watch the boxing channel like you (media) guys do."

The Pistons, who opened a 52-46 lead early in the third quarter, have dropped three straight games overall and 11 of their last 12 on the road to fall a season-high seven games under .500 (27-34). Detroit is 1-8 in its last nine contests against the Lakers.

Rick Fox scored 22 points, including a three-pointer that gave the Lakers the lead for good at 57-54 with 5:21 left in the third quarter.

"Rick Fox hurt us but he's a real quality player," said interim Detroit coach Alvin Gentry. "I think he's the glue that holds that team together. He does all the little things and he's a great defender."

The Pistons pulled within 77-75 when Jerry Stackhouse, who scored 23 points, converted a technical foul against O'Neal with 6:49 remaining. But the Lakers pulled away again, opening an 87-77 advantage on Eddie Jones' dunk with 4:36 left.

Detroit got no closer than 91-86 on Stackhouse's two foul shots with 1:40 left. The Lakers made it 94-86 on O'Neal's dunk and a foul shot by Derek Fisher, who recorded his first career double-double with 13 points.

"We have a great team, simple and clear," said O'Neal. "If we play smart, we'll be a hard team to beat. But if we play stupid, it could get ugly for us."

Grant Hill added 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who fell to 6-9 under Gentry and are 7-14 since reaching the .500 mark on January 22nd.

"We did everything that I thought we had to do to win the game," said Gentry. "When you're guarding that guy (O'Neal), he's just so big, there's nothing you can do. He's just a mountain in there."

Los Angeles won for the first time in four games on Sunday, the day on which the Lakers have suffered seven of their 18 losses this season.

"It's tough to wake up first thing in the morning and go out with an extreme amount of intensity and energy," said Fisher. "We hung in there in the first half and made it through some thumps in the second half. We came out with a whole lot of life and a lot of energy."
