GAME RECAP

Reggie Miller scored 25 points and Dale Davis added 22 as the Indiana Pacers defeated the Boston Celtics, 104-100, giving rookie coach Larry Bird his third straight victory over the team he led to three NBA championships in the 1980s.

The Pacers beat the Celtics 103-96 in Bird's return to Boston on January 18th and recorded a 95-88 triumph at home a week later.

Indiana posted its fifth straight victory over the Celtics and has captured nine of the last 10 meetings between the teams. Boston has won just one of its last 19 regular-season games in Indianapolis.

"It will never be (just) another game," said Bird. "I want to win every game, but when you play against them it adds a little excitement. The guys showed a lot of character today."

The Celtics (29-32) lost for only the second time in their last six contests and missed a chance to move within one game of .500 for the first time since they were 16-17 following a victory over Seattle on January 9th.

"This (Indiana) team is the deepest in the NBA," said Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "They are so difficult to wear out. We hope to eventually have a West Coast offense like Seattle or the Lakers and an East Coast defense like Miami, Indiana and New York."

Boston, which trailed 83-73 late in the third quarter, ripped off a 15-2 run to open an 88-85 lead on Dana Barros' fast-break layup with 8:37 left in the fourth quarter.

"The Celtics are a young, athletic team and if you're not prepared they will make you play," said Pacers reserve Antonio Davis. "We just hung in there until we got it done. It's tough coming off a road trip and playing a team like this."

The Pistons got their last points of the third quarter on Davis' dunk with 2:43 remaining in the period and did not get their first field goal of the final quarter until Fred Hoiberg's three-pointer tied the game at 88-88 with 8:09 remaining.

"It's like a 9:30 a.m. start for us coming from the West Coast," said Hoiberg, whose club won, 101-87, in their previous game on Friday night. "It was tough to get going, but we knew what we had to do. It was probably a good test for us, and great for us to get a win."

Hoiberg's basket ignited a 9-0 run that gave the Pacers a 94-88 lead on two free throws by Davis with 6:23 left. The Celtics pulled within 100-99 on Kenny Anderson's layup with 1:04 remaining, before Rik Smits, who added 14 points, and Davis each hit two foul shots in the final minute.

"I was worried about this game coming off the road trip," said Bird. "It seemed like everything was against us today. But, down the stretch, we made the plays we had to."

The Pacers, the fifth-best shooting team in the NBA, shot 55 percent (38-of-69) from the field, but made only 5-of-14 (36 percent) field goals in the fourth quarter.

Anderson scored 17 points and Ron Mercer had 16 for the Celtics, who have not won in Indiana since March 4th, 1995. Anderson also handed out 12 assists.

Chris Mullin scored 12 points and Mark Jackson added 11 as all five Indiana starters scored in double figures. Miller scored over 20 points for the 34th time this season, while Davis was 10-of-12 from the field.

"We just couldn't stop them," said Anderson. "We just didn't play good defense when we needed to. With their personnel, how deep they go, we needed to make stops and we didn't."

Indiana jumped out to a 27-14 lead on Jackson's three-pointer with 1:43 left in the first quarter, but the Celtics went to their trapping defense to get back in the game. Boston forced seven turnovers in the second quarter and took a 53-51 halftime lead on Marcer's jumper with 29 seconds left in the half.

"We've played well enough to beat them every time, but they seem to have our number," said Celtics forward Antoine Walker. "We just need to play hard and try to make the playoffs. We really needed this game, but we played 110 percent and that's all you can ask."
