GAME RECAP

Rod Strickland registered 26 points and 10 assists and Chris Webber sparked a game-ending 11-2 run with a jumper and a dunk to pace the Washington Wizards to a 100-91 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Wizards, who never trailed, won for the fifth time in their last seven games and denied Philadelphia its second three-game winning streak of the season. Webber finished with 23 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks for the Wizards, who beat Philadelphia for the fifth time in the last six meetings between the teams.

"It was a good, physical game. I like it like that," said Webber, whose team plays 10 of its next 12 games on the road. "This is the turning point now. It's going to be tough. We need to be consistent now because it's playoff time."

Derrick Coleman scored 21 points for the Sixers, despite leaving the game four minutes into the third quarter with a sprained left ankle. Theo Ratliff and Allen Iverson added 16 points apiece, while Joe Smith had 10 and 10 rebounds for the 76ers.

"I was mad that we didn't come out and play with fire and intensity," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "We missed some easy plays. We couldn't guard anybody. I don't look at this as a total clunker."

Washington built the lead to 89-78 with 7:09 remaining on a jumper by Calbert Cheaney, who finished with 12 points. But Philadelphia scored the next 11 points to tie the game. Smith had a three-point play, Aaron McKie made a pair of free throws, Ratliff hit a hook shot, Brian Shaw was credited with a hoop on a goaltending call against Webber and Tim Thomas sank a pair from the line to forge an 89-89 deadlock with 3:56 remaining.

But it was all Washington thereafter.

Webber hit a jumper at the 3:40 mark to give the Wizards the lead for good, 91-89, and dunked 87 seconds later to make it a four-point game. Strickland stroked a jumper to make it 95-89 with 1:38 remaining and Chris Whitney scored Washington's final five points -- all from the foul line.

"People out there were tired and just trying to get through the game," Strickland said. "We just gutted it out and got the victory. I'm just trying to be myself and be aggressive, it's nothing personal with anyone."

Whitney sank a pair from the line with 51 seconds left, pushing the cushion to 97-89 and made it a nine-point game with one free throw at 37.6 seconds. Ratliff responded with a dunk with 30.4 seconds remaining for the final Philadelphia points before Whitney converted two free throws with 24.4 seconds left for the final margin.

Tracy Murray added 17 points and Terry Davis scored just five, but registered season highs with 15 rebounds and 12 offensive boards for the Wizards. Ben Wallace contributed four points and 10 rebounds.

"No small forward or two guard is going to outrebound me," Daivs boasted. "I'm just having fun. They were rotating without him (Coleman) in there and I was taking advantage of that."

Washington shot 41 percent (38-of-93) from the field to 40 percent 40 percent (29-of-73) for the Sixers. Philadelphia made 32-of-36 free throws to Washington's 20-of-25 effort.

"The game was broken up," said Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "There was no sustained action either way. Now we can't look down the road. Last time, I talked about catching Cleveland, it was right here and Dallas came in and handed us our lunch. Tuesday's game (at Milwaukee) is winnable. We were fortunate that we made our free throws tonight."

The 76ers were within 24-21 with 2:40 left in the first quarter when Strickland keyed a 12-0 run that gave the Wizards a 15-point lead with 9:52 remaining in the first half.

"We started off flat tonight," Iverson said. "We had a couple of spurts, but we just couldn't get it done at the end. Strickland dominated. We just have to move on because we have another game again tomorrow (versus Orlando)."
