GAME RECAP

Karl Malone scored 29 points and grabbed a season-high 21 rebounds as the Utah Jazz swept the season series from the shorthanded Houston Rockets for the first time in 15 years with a 100-93 victory.

Jeff Hornacek added 15 points for the red-hot Jazz, who erased a nine-point deficit in the final 9 1/2 minutes for its seventh straight win and 14th in the last 15 games. Utah has scored at least 100 points in eight straight games and pulled within 1 1/2 games of Western Conference-leading Seattle.

Antoine Carr and John Stockton fueled Utah's comeback by combining for 15 points in the final period. The Jazz reached the century mark in all four wins over the Rockets and took the season series for the first time since winning all six games in 1982-83.

"I'm sure what you're going to hear is that Houston didn't have all their guys and I'm sure if they would have won this game everyone would have made a big deal out of it," Malone said. "They played a great ballgame but it's the character of this team -- we never stop. We started doing things down the stretch to win the ballgame. It's a nice win for us, and it's a win that we should be proud of."

Eddie Johnson poured in a season-high 37 points for the Rockets, but managed just two in the fourth quarter. Houston was playing without Hakeem Olajuwon, Kevin Willis and Mario Elie, all of whom were suspended for their roles in an altercation with the Phoenix Suns on Saturday.

Two free throws by Matt Maloney with 9:38 remaining in the fourth quarter gave Houston an 87-78 lead. Malone scored three straight points before Johnson hit for his only points of the final period for an 89-81 Rockets advantage with 7:55 to go.

But Utah ran off nine straight points to grab its first lead since the first quarter. Carr tipped in a miss before Malone and Stockton knocked down jumpers to bring the Jazz within 89-87 with 5:43 to play. Bryon Russell's jumper tied the game before Carr hit one free throw for a 90-89 Utah lead with 3:58 left.

Clyde Drexler's layup stopped that run and gave the Rockets their last lead, 91-90. But Stockton, who had eight of his 10 points in the period, nailed a pair of jumpers and sank two foul shots to give the Jazz a 96-91 advantage with 1:43 to go. Russell capped that 8-0 spurt with two free throws with 28 seconds remaining.

"We didn't make a lot of shots coming down the home stretch," Houston forward Charles Barkley said. "We got good shots but they just didn't go in. There is nothing you can do about that, I'm happy with the way we played. Obviously it was a little different without three of our regular starters, but I have no complaints about the game."

Utah, returning home from a 5-0 road trip, looked like it would blow Houston out, racing to a 12-3 lead in the first three minutes. But the Rockets stormed back with a 15-4 run and took a 25-19 lead after one.

Johnson, who shot 13-of-18 from the floor, netted 19 points in the second quarter, when Houston opened a double-digit cushion and built a 57-47 halftime lead. Malone, named Player of the Week earlier today, scored nine points in the third as the Jazz sliced the deficit to 78-74 entering the fourth.

Malone is averaging 33.3 points and 14 rebounds over his last four games.

"I think in the last six or seven games he's probably played as well as I've ever seen him play," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said.

Carr finished with 13 points and Shandon Anderson had 10 for the Jazz, who shot 43 percent (36-of-83) from the field after making over 50 percent in all of their last four games. Utah outrebounded Houston, 48-32.

Drexler scored 15 points, Barkley totaled 10 points and 11 rebounds and Othella Harrington chipped in 10 and seven for the Rockets, who shot 49 percent (35-of-72). Matt Bullard and Rodrick Rhodes, forced into the starting lineup, combined for five points.
