GAME RECAP

Antonio McDyess scored 12 of his 18 points in the first half, leading five players in double figures, and the Phoenix Suns defeated Denver 100-76, sending the Nuggets to their 16th consecutive loss.

Jason Kidd chipped in with 17 points, Cliff Robinson and Hot Rod Williams 13 each and Steve Nash 10 for the Suns, who won for just the second time in their last six road games. McDyess, a former Nugget, added eight rebounds for Phoenix, which has defeated Denver in nine of its last 12 meetings overall.

"When you're trapping, rotating and switching, McDyess is going to get open because of that," said Denver rookie Danny Fortson, who scored 12 points while making his fourth start of the season. "We weren't quick enough to rotate to defend him. He's very tough to play against."

Johnny Newman scored 20 points and LaPhonso Ellis had 14 and nine rebounds for Denver, which lost its seventh straight home game to drop to 4-27 for the season at McNichols Arena. Earlier this season, between December 9th and January 23rd, the Nuggets tied an NBA single-season record by losing 23 consecutive games.

The Suns outrebounded the Nuggets 39-34, outshot them from the field 51 percent (38-for-75) to 39 percent (27-for-70), and turned 24 Denver turnovers into 27 points. The loss was Denver's 19th by 20 points or more this season.

"We just didn't have the effort tonight, mentally or physically," Denver coach Bill Hanzlik said. "We were down by nine at the half and got a little closer in the third quarter, but we just didn't get the job done."

Things started off well enough for Denver, which used a 9-3 run in the first quarter to open up a 17-10 lead. A fastbreak dunk by Ellis started off the the spurt and Newman's 19-footer finished it off at the 5:20 mark.

It took the Suns just over two minutes to regain the lead for good. Kidd hit two free throws and a 15-footer and he also had a steal and fed Robinson for a fastbreak dunk to make it 18-17 Phoenix with 3:18 left in the quarter. A jumper by Williams -- who had 10 points in the quarter -- with just two-tenths of a second left gave Phoenix a 26-21 advantage.

Phoenix coach Danny Ainge was ejected from the game with 6:23 left in the first quarter after picking up two technical fouls for arguing with officials.

"It was bogus, a ridiculous exit from the game," Ainge said. "I shouldn't have gotten the first technical. It was a terribly played basketball game by both teams. And that's about all that counts."

Scott Skiles coached the rest of the game for Phoenix after Ainge was tossed.

The Suns built their lead up to 38-25 midway through the second quarter after Kevin Johnson hit a driving layup. Ellis and Newman had five points each the rest of the quarter to help Denver get within 48-37 at the break.

After Anthony Goldwire and Bryant Stith hit back-to-back layups, Denver pulled to within 50-45 at the 8:31 mark of the third quarter. The Suns responded with a 9-0 burst to regain command of the game.

McDyess started off the spurt with a dunk, Kidd followed with a three-pointer and Williams added two free throws to increase Phoenix's lead to 59-45.

The Suns took a 77-60 lead into the fourth quarter and extended it to as much as 27 points, 100-73, with just 1:02 remaining after George McCloud connected on a pair of free throws. Denver got no closer than 16 points in the fourth quarter.

"I thought we came out tonight and played hard," McDyess said. "But so did they. In the second half we played even harder and got the job done. The fans here still make me feel like I'm at home. It's kind of tough them.

"I feel bad but it's their job and they have to play hard. Last year, we won 21 games and I know how miserable that was."
