GAME RECAP

Clyde Drexler scored 24 points and Kevin Willis celebrated his 1,000th career game with 20 points and 14 rebounds as the Houston Rockets defeated the Dallas Mavericks for the eighth consecutive time, 97-91.

Charles Barkley, also playing in his 1,000th career game, added 14 points and 17 rebounds off the bench for the Houston. Willis and Barkley join teammates Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwon and Eddie Johnson as Rockets who have played in 1,000 games.

"Playing 1,000 games just means you're old," joked Barkley. "It's a great honor, but unfortunately, we're all on the same team. My original goal was to play 10 years and I've been very blessed to play this long."

The Rockets, who won for just the fourth time in 10 contests, broke a six-game losing streak when scoring under 100 points. Houston holds a 5 1/2-game lead over Sacramento for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Michael Finley scored 25 points and Cedric Ceballos added 24 for the Mavericks, who dropped their sixth straight in Houston since April 11th, 1995.

The Rockets led 29-26 after one quarter and extended the advantage to 42-30 with a 13-4 run over the next 4:07. Olajuwon and Willis each had four points in the spurt.

"The first half I didn't like at all," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson. "Houston came out like hornets and they were really ready to play. The second half I liked. We showed a lot more energy and made a game of it."

Dallas whittled down a 17-point deficit with a 9-2 run, pulling within 64-54 on a 22-footer by Michael Finley early in the third quarter. But after the teams traded baskets, the Rockets took control by scoring the game's next 11 points.

Matt Bullard started the fireworks with a 22-footer and Willis followed with a dunk and layup to make it 72-56. Drexler hit a technical free throw resulting on a call against Ceballos, Willis converted a layup and Drexler's dunk gave Houston a 77-56 bulge with 3:23 remaining in the third.

"It's tough to dig yourself a hole and then come out of it," said Finley. "Houston had all of their cylinders going, both inside and outside. When they have that, they are one of the toughest teams in the league."

Houston maintained the lead, building it to 96-78 with 4:51 to play before the Mavericks closed the game with a 13-1 run.

"This is a good overall game for us," said Drexler. "We clicked well, especially in the first half. We have some games coming up at home that we should win and build upon this."

Olajuwon, who was elbowed in the head and left the game with 10:15 to play in the third quarter to receive stiches, returned to score six of his 13 points in the final period. Brent Price also added 13 points for the Rockets, who shot 44 percent (26-of-81) while building a 51-27 rebounding advantage.

"Tonight we preached that we wanted to dominate the glass," Willis said. "I thought Charles, Hakeem and myself did an excellent job with that."

Chris Anstey scored 12 points and Martin Muursepp chipped in 11 for the Mavericks, who shot 49 percent (36-of-73).

Dallas center Shawn Bradley was not with the team due to a right groin contusion.
