GAME RECAP

Charles Barkley sank a milestone free throw with 16 seconds left in the fourth quarter to put Houston ahead for good as the Rockets continued their recent mastery over the Sacramento Kings with an 89-86 victory.

The game was tied, 84-84, before Barkley was fouled by Lawrence Funderburke while driving to the basket. Barkley made the first free throw before missing the second. The foul shot moved him ahead of Wilt Chamberlin into 10th place on the all-time list with 6,057 free throws made.

Sacramento had a chance to tie but Funderburke missed an open baseline jumper that was rebounded by Barkley with 3.6 seconds left. Barkley sank a pair of free throws for a three-point lead.

On the ensuing possession, Sacramento's Mitch Richmond was fouled by Matt Maloney before he could attempt a three-pointer. Richmond sank both free throws to narrow the deficit to 87-86 with 2.2 seconds to play. Hakeem Olajuwon made a pair of free throws to restore Houston's three-point lead with 1.7 seconds left. The Kings did not get a final shot.

Olajuwon finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds and Clyde Drexler added 19 points for the Rockets, who defeated Sacramento for the third time this season and seventh straight time overall. Houston has won 30 of the last 35 meetings, dating back to the 1989-90 season.

"Tonight was a very close game," Drexler said. "We barely won at the very end. I thought we did really well in the clutch. This was a game that we needed to win since they're behind us in the standings."

Richmond scored 18 points and Williamson netted 15 for Sacramento, which has lost four straight and 11 of its last 13 games.

The Kings held a 71-68 lead entering the final quarter, but Houston scored the first five points, capped by Eddie Johnson's lay-in, to take a two-point lead with 10:10 to play.

Sacramento answered with the next six points. Billy Owens hit a jumper, Tariq Abdul-Wahad made a layup and Richmond drained a jumper for a 77-73 lead with 5:05 to play.

Richmond struggled from the floor, hitting 5-of-19 shots and going 3-of-9 from behind the arc. Sacramento shot 40 percent (32-of-80) but the Rockets were even worse, making 35 percent (28-of-79).

"I definitely had a number of good looks, but they wouldn't go down for me," said Richmond. "Even though I didn't shoot well, we were still in the game and had a chance to win. We are a young team and don't get any breaks in the clutch. Houston is a veteran team and knows how to get things done."

Barkley, who finished with 17 points and 11 boards, ended the Rockets' scoring drought of more than five minutes with a three-point play that cut the deficit to 77-76 at the 5:02 mark. Sacramento went up 84-79 on Richmond's three-pointer with 2:58 to play, but Mario Elie nailed a three-pointer and Olajuwon made a pair of free throws to knot the game, 84-84, with 55 seconds remaining.

"It wasn't pretty but we'll take it," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "I really feel good about how we stayed composed. We were down by five with not a lot of time left, but we got it done on both ends of the court. We hade a good fourth quarter defensively, only allowing 15 points and then making some clutch free throws."

The Kings got off to a good start, taking a 22-13 lead on Otis Thorpe's layin with 2:15 left in the first quarter. Sacramento led 24-19 after one period and held the Rockets to only 27 percent shooting (6-of-22) in the opening 12 minutes.

Sacramento took its biggest lead of the half when Mark Hendrickson's three-point play that capped a 7-0 run and gave the Kings a 43-33 advantage with 3:50 to play. Houston closed the half on an 11-5 spurt to draw within 48-44.
