GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan scored 30 points and Toni Kukoc added 21 as the Chicago Bulls defeated the San Antonio Spurs for the sixth straight time, 96-86.

Scottie Pippen scored 10 of his 13 points in the opening period and Dennis Rodman grabbed 16 rebounds for the Bulls, who remained within 1 1/2 games of idle Seattle for the best record in the NBA. Chicago has won five of its last six games and has not lost to San Antonio since January 24th, 1995. Ron Harper also tallied 13 points, making 5-of-6 shots, and the Bulls held a 42-34 rebounding advantage.

"It's hard to tell right now just how much potential this team has," Jordan said about the Spurs. "Avery Johnson was coming off an injury tonight and Chuck Person only got a limited number of minutes (34). When this team gets healthy they're going to have a lot of potential down the stretch."

"I wanted to go out tonight and show the people that I'm not old, I'm not washed up, I'm still working," said Rodman, who was traded from the Spurs to the Bulls for Will Perdue prior to last season. "I was working hard tonight."

David Robinson had 35 points and eight rebounds and Jaren Jackson added 15 points off the bench for the Spurs, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Tim Duncan contributed 14 points and 12 boards, but San Antonio's starting backcourt of Johnson and Vinny Del Negro combined to shoot just 3-for-12 from the floor, totalling seven points.

"Every time we made a run, they knocked down the big shot, going from seven to 10 or six to nine. That was the key to the game tonight," said Johnson, who had missed the last two games with a hip injury.

Jordan and Pippen combined for 17 points in the first quarter, staking the Bulls to a 27-17 lead.

Jackson sank a three-pointer to ignite an 11-1 burst and close the deficit to 32-26 with just under six minutes left in the second quarter. Person, who had seven points, made a jumper to cap the run and give the Spurs their only lead, 34-33, with 2:31 to play in the first half. Jordan answered with an 18-footer to restore Chicago's lead, but Tim Duncan had a tip-in in the final seconds of the first half to make it 40-39.

"We got off to a rough start tonight," said Robinson. "We were beat on the boards and they had the big lead. We fought back going into the half. We haven't had big runs recently, but tonight we really needed them. When you can't score points in bunches, you can't come back against a team that plays as well as they do."

Kukoc opened the third quarter with a jumper that ignited a 13-2 burst. Jordan's 16-footer capped it and gave Chicago a 53-41 bulge with 8:40 left in the third.

San Antonio used a 9-2 surge to close within 57-54 when Robinson made a short jumper with 4:20 remaining. But Jordan answered with a turnaround jumper that started a 9-3 burst. Harper's basket brought the lead to 66-57 with 2:08 left in the third and the Spurs did not come closer than six points thereafter.
