GAME RECAP

Tim Duncan had 25 points and 17 rebounds and David Robinson scored 13 of his 21 points in the pivotal third quarter to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 96-85 victory over the undermanned and outsized Milwaukee Bucks.

Vinny Del Negro scored 15 points and Avery Johnson handed out 10 assists for San Antonio, which won for the fourth time in five games and swept the two-game season series from the Bucks for the fourth time in six years.

"We came out a bit sloppy in the first half," Duncan said. "Things didn't go our way early. They came out with energy and hit some shots, and in the third we came out and got it together. We had a great third period, we got some running going, got some turnovers and got some lobs to David. And we played solid defensively and that got us going."

The Spurs overcame a two-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Bucks, 30-17, in the third quarter. San Antonio outrebounded Milwaukee, 16-7, in the period, leading to several easy baskets. The Spurs shot 60 percent (12-for-20) from the field in the quarter, while the Bucks made just 7-of-22 (32 percent) of their shots.

"We worked hard, but we made some dumb, dumb mistakes, and we turned the ball over," Robinson said. "We found our rhythm in the second half and we struggled a bit. But the effort was there tonight and we just got it back. We have to play catch-up. Utah's playing great right now, as is Chicago. We have to really focus and get ourselves mentally ready for the playoff run."

Rookie Jerald Honeycutt scored a season-high 16 points and Ervin Johnson added 15 and 12 rebounds for the Bucks, who are without leading scorer Glenn Robinson, top playmaker Terrell Brandon and leading rebounder Tyrone Hill. Elliot Perry totaled 15 points and seven assists for Milwaukee, which shot 38 percent (31-for-82) and lost its sixth straight game.

"We gave a great effort tonight," said Bucks coach Chris Ford. "We hung tough in the first half but didn't shoot well in the second. Spurs fans understand what it's like to be decimated by injuries. We have to pitch almost a perfect game in order to come in here to win."

Del Negro scored six points in a key 14-2 third-period run that began with Robinson's dunk, cutting Milwaukee's lead to 47-46 with 9:53 left. Robinson followed with two free throws 26 seconds later to put the Spurs ahead for good, and Del Negro hit a seven-footer to cap the spurt for a 58-49 advantage with 5:33 to go.

With all starters except Duncan on the bench in the fourth quarter, San Antonio kept the lead in double digits until the closing minutes. Duncan hit a free throw with 2:43 remaining to give the Spurs their biggest advantage, 90-74.

Ray Allen had six of his nine points and Perry added four in the first period as Milwaukee took a 22-18 lead. Ervin Johnson scored four points in a 10-0 second-period burst that gave the Bucks their biggest lead, 38-29. Avery Johnson answered with a layup to spark an 11-2 surge by the Spurs that ended with a free throw by Del Negro to tie the game, 40-40, just under a minute before halftime. Michael Curry, who had eight points, converted a pair of free throws with 26 seconds remaining and the Bucks took a 42-40 into the break.
