GAME RECAP

Dale Ellis tied a season high with 23 points and fueled the decisive fourth-quarter run as the Seattle SuperSonics continued their home dominance of the Los Angeles Clippers with a 99-80 victory, their 50th of the season.

Clinging to a 79-75 lead with 9 1/2 minutes to play, Seattle reeled off 12 straight points to virtually seal the win. Ellis sparked that spurt with a 15-footer and a three-pointer before Detlef Schrempf capped it with a jumper, building a 91-75 lead with 6:02 to play. Los Angeles got no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Vin Baker contributed 17 points and eight rebounds and Gary Payton added 12, nine and eight assists for the SuperSonics (50-15), who own the league's best record and notched their sixth straight 50-win season. Seattle, which improved to 17-1 against Pacific Division foes, has won five straight games and seven in a row at home.

"Our defense is getting better both rebounding and we're hitting the ball more, getting more deflections," Sonics coach George Karl said. "We were a little slow in our activity, but in the fourth quarter it was a strength. We got stronger as the game went along."

Eric Piatkowski scored 17 points to pace the Clippers, who have lost their last eight trips to Seattle since winning there on January 25th, 1994. Los Angeles fell to 2-34 all-time in Seattle and has lost 26 of the last 29 games of the series overall.

"The Sonics played good defense in the fourth quarter and we missed some key shots," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "We were just trying to keep it close, where we could win it in the fourth quarter."

Things became heated with two minutes to go in the third quarter when the Clippers' Lamond Murray and the Sonics' Jerome Kersey were jockeying for position in the lane. The two started arguing, exchanged blows, and were both ejected for fighting. Late in the fourth quarter, Lorenzen Wright was whistled for a flagrant foul when he hacked Baker to the floor.

"I think it (the altercation) deenergized us because it took Lamond out," Fitch said. "He'll get a phone call tomorrow and probably get a one-game vacation."

Ellis drained 3-of-6 three-pointers and led a 46-point effort from the bench for the Sonics, who buried 8-of-19 from behind the arc. The Clippers made just 3-of-21 from behind the arc and received 20 points from their reserves.

Seattle took the lead for good late in the first quarter. A dunk by Murray gave Los Angeles a 25-24 lead with lead with 1:13 remaining, but the Sonics scored the final eight points of the period to take control.

In the final minute, Ellis drilled an 18-footer and a three-pointer before Payton hit from behind the arc with 2.4 seconds left, giving Seattle a 32-25 lead.

"They got off to a good start and that has happened to us before," Baker said. "It's probably natural to have a letdown after playing the Lakers. But fortunately we got a good effort out of our bench."

Greg Anthony, who scored 10 points off the bench, drained a three-pointer to increase the advantage to 48-35 with 5:46 to go in the second quarter. But the Clippers used an 11-2 spurt to get back in it. Rodney Rogers scored seven of his 15 points on that run and his three-pointer capped it, pulling Los Angeles within 50-46 with 2:49 left before halftime.

The deficit remained the same at halftime, but a three-pointer by Piatkowski had the Clippers within 64-63 with 5:27 remaining in the third period. Baker scored eight points in the quarter as Seattle took a 73-69 lead into the final period.

Schrempf and Hersey Hawkins chipped in 10 points apiece for the Sonics, who scored 34 points off 20 Clipper turnovers. Hawkins had nine rebounds, helping Seattle to a 46-42 edge on the glass.

"I think what really was the case was that we got them in the halfcourt and didn't give them any transition buckets," Hawkins said. "We rebounded the ball well and maybe that fight ignited us."

Darrick Martin scored 13 points and Murray added 12 for Los Angeles, which managed just 10 points off 14 Sonic turnovers. Seattle has swept the Clippers in three of the last four seasons.
