GAME RECAP

Keith Van Horn shook off an injured toe to score 19 points and Sam Cassell hit six free throws in the final 41 seconds as the New Jersey Nets posted a 93-87 victory over the Orlando Magic.

The game was important to both teams from a playoff standpoint. The Nets, who are now in sole possession of the final playoff spot after Washington's loss, opened a one-game lead over the Wizards and 1 1/2 games over the Magic.

Besides Van Horn, who sat out the last three games, the Nets also had center Jayson Williams back in the lineup. In his first action after missing six games with a strained abdominal muscle, the NBA's second-leading rebounder scored six points and grabbed 10 boards.

"It feels good to be back," said Williams. "I didn't feel we were going to lose the game. For the first time (since before the break), I feel real good about our team. There was no way we were going to lose this game."

Cassell, who scored 17 points, converted a three-point play with 5:35 left to give New Jersey an 82-75 lead. But the Magic fought back, forging an 83-83 tie with 2:26 left on a jumper by Nick Anderson, who scored a season-high 38 points.

Kendall Gill answered with a jumper, Van Horn hit two free throws and Cassell hit six straight from the line to secure the Nets' fourth win in a row over Orlando.

"We played pretty good," Gill said. "I'm just glad we got everybody back. Once we get healthy, we'll be right back to doing the same things as before ... winning a lot."

Rony Seikaly, facing his former team for the first time since a mid-February trade, was held to five points. Seikaly, who was shipped from Orlando to New Jersey after refusing a trade to Utah, was scoreless over three quarters.

Kerry Kittles collected 15 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Nets to a commanding 47-30 edge on the boards, including a 20-8 advantage on the offensive glass. New Jersey shot 1-of-8 from three-point range but managed to shoot 46 percent (38-of-83) overall.

"We probably had no offense except for Nick," Orlando coach Chuck Daly said. "You cannot give up that many rebounds, especially 20 offensive boards. We have no margin of error on the break, we just cannot overcome crucial mistakes. And when you cannot do this, you're playing against a short clock."

Van Horn added eight rebounds and Cassell tied a season high with eight boards to go along with six assists. Neither Van Horn nor Williams showed signs of fatigue despite their layoffs, playing 34 and 31 minutes, respectively.

"Good win, we needed to have that game," said Nets coach John Calipari, whose team improved their March record to just 2-7. "Before we had to play flawless. Now we have a little room for error. It was a great team effort, I'm very proud of them. They needed this."

The Nets did not trail over the first three quarters but fell behind early in the fourth when five straight points by Mark Price gave Orlando a 68-67 edge with 10:19 to play.

Gill, who scored six of his 13 points in the final quarter, retaliated with consecutive buckets and reserve Chris Gatling got the last of his 14 points on a dunk with 8:51 remaining as the Nets took a 73-68 lead.

Orlando pulled even when Anderson's high-arching nine-footer from the left side made it 83-83. But New Jersey scored the next six points on Gill's 19-footer and two free throws each by Van Horn and Cassell for a 89-83 lead that was never challenged.

"We fought our way back into the game but it was too little too late," said Anderson. "This week is going to make or break the season in terms of us going to the playoffs. Next week is very important, but we need to go out there and play aggressively. Every game is important."

The Nets hit 11-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter. Over the first 36 minutes, New Jersey was 5-of-8 from the line.

Anderson hit 17-of-33 shots, but missed a pair of three-point attempts in the final minute. Anderson launched 23 more shots than any other teammate. Derek Strong, who had 13 points off the bench, was closest with 4-of-10 shooting. Horace Grant contributed 15 points and eight rebounds as the Magic shot 47 percent (36-of-76) from the field.

New Jersey used three straight buckets early in the second quarter to equal its biggest lead at 25-17. Gatling had a pair of jumpers and Van Horn a 10-footer in the small burst.
