GAME RECAP

The Minnesota Timberwolves snapped a four-game losing streak and avoided falling under the .500 mark for the first time since December as they held the lowly Denver Nuggets to only eight points in the third quarter en route to a 104-88 victory.

After former Timberwolf Dean Garrett hit a jumper to tie the game at 52-52 with 9:12 left in the third period, Minnesota took control by scoring the next 14 points.

Kevin Garnett hit a jumper a to start the burst and Tom Hammonds, who scored five points in the run, capped the surge with two free throws for a 66-52 advantage with 73 seconds left in the period.

The Nuggets, who surpassed their season-low one-quarter output by one, missed their last 14 shots from the field in the third quarter, making just 2-of-20 from the field. Denver scored seven points in the fourth quarter at Golden State on December 23rd.

"They didn't do much on defense and we didn't do much on offense," Garrett said. "We just missed a lot of shots. The whole team went cold. They got us caught up in Timberwolves basketball, running up and down the floor. That's not our game. That's their game."

Garnett scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Hammonds and Terry Porter contributed 16 points apiece for the Wolves, who avoided falling under the break-even mark for the first time since they were 13-14 on December 26th. Minnesota lost at Denver on December 28th.

"You might say that based on the fact of who they played lately and who they have beaten there are no gimmes," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "They have been playing pretty well. To our credit we weren't really sharp in the first half, but we came out and defensively turned up the heat."

Danny Fortson led Denver with 21 points and 12 rebounds. The Nuggets (8-61) have lost consecutive games following a stretch in which they won three of four and still need one win to match the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, whose 9-73 mark was the worst in NBA history.

The Wolves held a 68-54 lead heading into final quarter and took their biggest lead of contest at 88-63 with 7:01 on Anthony Peeler's free throw. Denver got no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Minnesota shot 48 percent (40-of-84) from the floor while holding the Nuggets to just 36 percent (30-of-83). The Wolves also held a 49-40 edge on the boards.

"We couldn't throw it in the ocean in the third quarter," commented Denver coach Bill Hanzlik. "I thought we played a really good first half and we spent a lot of energy. We just didn't have our legs tonight. We just couldn't make a shot. Not that it's a consolation but we played a good first half."

The Nuggets looked nothing like the worst team in the league in first quarter, jumping out to a 17-7 lead after Cory Alexander, who scored 15 points, drained his third three-pointer in the opening six minutes. Minnesota used a 13-5 spurt to close the period and draw within 22-20.

With the Wolves trailing 35-32, they scored 10 of the next 12 points, capped by Sam Mitchell's 15-foot jumper for a 42-37 advantage with 3:35 to play before intermission. Minnesota led 50-46 at the break behind 11 points from Stephon Marbury, who finished with 15 points and six assists.

"Denver has been playing well. We started off in the first quarter not playing very well, but turned it up," Porter said. "We were able to take over. That's something we have to do. We can't let teams who we are supposed to beat come in here and beat us."
