GAME RECAP

Hakeem Olajuwon had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Matt Maloney added 19 points, including five three-pointers, as the red-hot Houston Rockets completed a season series sweep with a 103-95 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Olajuwon scored six points and Maloney eight during a 25-9 run that closed the first quarter. Houston, which has won six straight games, was 7-of-13 from beyond the arc in the first half. Maloney hit 5-of-8 three-pointers overall.

Charles Barkley added 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Rockets, who have won nine in a row from their intrastate rivals. Houston, which led by 20 points in the second half, played most of the fourth quarter without Clyde Drexler, who with a mild groin strain.

"It was a good win for us," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We had a nice homestand (5-0). Getting the first game on a road trip is very big."

"We are playing well right now," Barkley said. "We have beaten every team we should beat. Now for the fun part -- going on the road for a week. It was a good win for us but we will know more after the road trip."

Michael Finley scored 26 points and Shawn Bradley added 23 and nine rebounds for the Mavericks, who have not beaten Houston since March 27th, 1996. Dallas also missed out on a chance to win three straight games for the first time since beginning the season 3-0.

"They hung in there and tried," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I'm sure there is going to be a game where we can't come back from 18 or 20. It hasn't happened for a long time. They found a way to fight back and stay in the game."

Dallas took a 7-2 lead just under two minutes into the contest but Maloney hit a three-pointer to spark the 25-9 burst. Maloney capped the spurt with a driving layup with 37 seconds left to give Houston a 27-16 advantage.

The Rockets led 57-45 at the half, making 22-of-41 shots. Dallas was just 19-of-45 from the field over the first two quarters.

The Mavericks trailed by 20 points midway through the fourth quarter but began to rally and a layup by Bradley drew them within 92-82 with 4:30 to go. Eddie Johnson answered with a jumper for Houston but Finley got a bucket for Dallas.

The Mavericks had a chance to draw even closer when Barkley was hammered under the basket and no foul was called. Martin Muursepp took the ball into the frontcourt and was fouled. A demonstrative Barkley was called for a technical foul but Finley missed the free throw. Muursepp then made his two from the line to draw Dallas within 96-88 with 3:13 left.

But Mario Elie sank an open jumper and Muursepp missed a three-pointer and Houston was able to hang on from there. In the closing minutes, Barkley was called for elbowing after he swung his arms wildly after grabbing a rebound.

"Charles has always got something going," Tomjanovich added. "He did a great job of coming and putting some pressure on them with his offense."

Houston held a 53-35 rebounding edge, helping to offset 21 turnovers.
