GAME RECAP

Shawn Kemp scored 11 of his 27 points in the first quarter as the Cleveland Cavaliers opened the game with a 12-0 run and closed a West Coast road trip with their fourth straight win, a 100-79 rout of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kemp also grabbed 13 rebounds as Cleveland's starting frontcourt dominated the Clippers. Cedric Henderson had 20 points and four rebounds and Zydrunas Ilgauskas contributed 19 points and 12 boards for the Cavaliers. Los Angeles' starting frontcourt totaled just 25 points and 13 rebounds.

"They have a big frontline and we knew they were going to attack us inside," Henderson said. "We did a good job of shutting them off and rebounding and we played a pretty good all-around defense."

Maurice Taylor scored 17 points and Rodney Rogers and Eric Piatkowski chipped in 13 apiece for the Clippers, who have lost nine of the last 10 meetings in this series.

Cleveland was never threatened. After Wesley Person opened the game with a layup, Kemp scored six straight points to make it 8-0 just over 2 1/2 minutes into the contest. Henderson followed with consecutive layups to give the Cavaliers the first 12 points before the Clippers finally got on the board.

The lead ballooned to 22-4 after Kemp's dunk with 4:51 remaining in the first. Cleveland shot 58 percent in building a 28-12 lead entering the second quarter. Los Angeles was just 4-of-22 (18 percent) in the first 12 minutes.

"They are a good basketball team and you can't go out and play that type of basketball and expect to win," Piatkowski said. "We're going to have a lot more embarrassments if we don't start playing with pride."

Taylor opened the second with a bucket for the Clippers. But Vitaly Potapenko made a layup, Derek Anderson buried a three-pointer and Kemp dunked to extend Cleveland's lead to 35-14 with 8:46 left in the quarter. The Cavaliers' led by as many as 27 points in the period before the Clippers closed the half on an 8-2 run to narrow the deficit to 49-30 at the break.

Los Angeles briefly had hope when a three-pointer by Rogers cut the deficit to 51-36 one minute into the third quarter. But Ilgauskas had consecutive inside buckets around a jumper by Kemp to push the lead back to 21 points. It grew as large as 32 on a tip by Kemp with 3:40 left in the period and the bulge was 79-52 heading into the fourth.

Person and Anderson had nine points apiece for the Cavaliers, who shot 49 percent (41-of-83) from the field and held a 51-37 rebounding advantage. Cleveland completed its second three-game sweep on the West Coast this season, having defeated Golden State, Vancouver and the Los Angeles Lakers in the first week of December.

"We had a high level of concentration, this was a very important game," Cleveland coach Mike Fratello said. "We wanted to finish the trip with three solid games. The Clippers can score some points, but tonight our defense was tough. Shawn came out strong early and really set the tone for us."

James Robinson finished with 10 points for the Clippers, who shot 33 percent (28-of-85). They were outscored in the paint, 58-34.
