GAME RECAP

Cliff Robinson scored 29 points, Rex Chapman added 28 and Danny Manning 25 off the bench to lead the hot-shooting Phoenix Suns to a 109-102 Pacific Division victory over the first-place Seattle SuperSonics.

Robinson made 11-of-18 shots and Chapman hit 10-of-15 as the Suns shot 57.5 percent (42-for-73) from the field. Manning shot 10-of-16 and grabbed seven rebounds for the Suns, who won for the sixth time in seven games and improved to 12-7 against divisional opponents.

"We just wanted to do what we could to be really active against this team, take advantage of some of the mismatches that we felt would work in our favor," said Robinson. "We wanted to go at Detlef (Schrempf), we wanted to go at Baker and make those guys play down in the post. We really did a good job not letting us get down after their run. We know they're a very good team, but we feel we're a good team as well."

Gary Payton recorded 30 points, six rebounds and five assists while limiting Phoenix point guard Jason Kidd to six points. But the SuperSonics have lost consecutive games to divisional foes after starting with a 17-1 mark against Pacific teams.

Vin Baker scored 16 points and Detlef Schrempf added 14 for Seattle, which is a half-game ahead of the Utah Jazz for the top spot in the Western Conference.

"I don't know if they outworked us," Baker said about Phoenix. "As far as I know everyone came to play tonight, so I don't know about being outhustled, but they did shoot the ball really well. It seems like everybody is more intense down the stretch. It will be good to go back to Seattle and take care of business and do the thihgs we should be doing, cause we slipped up yesterday against L.A. and came in here tonight against a hot-shooting team. But what it means I don't know because we know we can beat them, we have beaten them twice."

Kidd handed out 14 assists as the Suns moved within 2 1/2 games of the Los Angeles Lakers for second place in the Pacific. Phoenix also stopped a five-game losing streak against teams with winning records. The Suns had lost both previous meetings to the Sonics this season and eight of the last 10 matchups.

"We knew we could," said Chapman about beating Seattle. "We felt we let a game get away there. We played a good game there and felt like we gave one away here also. Tonight we were able to hold it together the whole game. Everybody's just positioning themselves for the playoffs right now. We knew we could beat Seattle, conversely they know they can beat us. So I don't know if it sends a message, it's just good to get a win."

Schrempf converted a three-point play to pull the Sonics within 65-62 with 9:50 left in the third quarter. But Robinson answered with a pair of free throws 15 seconds later, sparking a 16-6 burst. Chapman had a pair of three-pointers in the run that ended with a layup by Hot Rod Williams for an 81-68 advantage with 5:24 to go in the third.

Phoenix brought a 90-80 lead into the fourth period and neither team scored until Payton hit a three-pointer with 8:22 left. Payton, who was 4-for-6 from behind the arc, hit another three-pointer and Greg Anthony's layup capped an 8-1 surge and pulled the Sonics within 91-88 with 6:54 to play. The Suns did not hit a shot from the floor in the fourth until Robinson hit a layup and free throw for a 94-88 lead with 6:24 left. Robinson made another layup 32 seconds later and Seattle failed to come closer than six points thereafter.

Robinson had 13 points and Chapman 12 as the Suns shot 62 percent (13-for-21) and took a 31-26 lead after the first period. Seattle tied the game five times in the second quarter with the final time coming when Schrempf converted two free throws to make it, 52-52, with 3:02 remaining. Champman responded with a pair of free throws 16 seconds later. Robinson followed with a 17-footer and then a layup to stretch the lead to 58-52 with 1:46 left. Seattle trailed 58-55 at the break after Baker hit a layup and Jerome Kersey sank a free throw.
