GAME RECAP

Tim Duncan scored 26 points and grabbed 21 rebounds and Chuck Person sank three of his four three-pointers during a pivotal third-quarter run as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Phoenix Suns, 93-83.

Duncan was 12-of-22 from the field and became the first rookie in more than 25 months to record a 20-20 double-double. The last rookie to accomplish the feat was Joe Smith, who did it on February 7th, 1996 while with Golden State.

"I felt pretty good tonight," Duncan said. "I missed a lot of shots I should have made. Even early though, I noticed a different vibe from the team. We were more confident, we were playing well, stepping up, and talking to each other."

David Robinson added 17 points and 16 rebounds as San Antonio defeated Phoenix for the first time in four meetings this season. Vinny Del Negro, who scored 15 points, sparked a 22-8 run that left the Spurs ahead 71-59 with 91 seconds to go in the third quarter.

Person, who hit four three-pointers in the quarter and finished with 14 points, had three baskets from beyond the arc in the spurt. San Antonio also enjoyed a 55-42 edge on the boards and made 17-of-21 free throw attempts.

"That's what Chuck does," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "He lives to shoot threes. I was pleased with the good team defense. Tim rebounded and challenged shots. David was on the perimeter getting his hands up. The big guys played good defense."

"The win tonight was real important, especially coming off the last game," Robinson said. "We have a tough stretch and need to start playing good basketball. We have to really finish up strong."

Rex Chapman scored 30 points and Antonio McDyess added 14 for Phoenix, which lost for just the second time in eight games. The loss dropped the Suns into fifth place in the Western Conference, one game behind San Antonio, which would have the homecourt edge over Phoenix in a first-round playoff series.

Suns coach Danny Ainge addressed the possibility of these two teams meetings in the first round.

"I don't like this matchup at all really. They have the two big guys inside and they beat us up inside and beat us on the glass every time. It's a long season and there's still 20 more games to go but odds are that's the way it will be."

"Maybe they had a little more incentive to win tonight than we did and that might have been the difference," Chapman said. "Their big guys played excellent and when Chuck got hot he opened it up even more for them."

Chapman had 10 points in the opening quarter as the teams played to a 21-21 tie. Duncan began to assert himself more in the second quarter but Chapman remained hot. He had 10 more points in the quarter as the Suns took a 44-42 halftime edge.

Del Negro's jumper with 8:50 left in the third tied the score, 51-51, and Robinson converted a three-point play 30 seconds later to give San Antonio a lead it didn't relinquish. Avery Johnson's layup with 91 seconds left in the quarter capped the spurt and gave the Spurs a 71-59 advantage.

Johnson scored nine points and had eight assists for the Spurs, who avoided losing two straight games for the second time this month.

Chapman was 11-of-21 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds. He was 3-of-7 from three-point range but the rest of Suns combined to shoot 2-of-11. Phoenix has also dropped six of its last seven games against opponents with a winning record.
