GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan scored 33 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 5.4 seconds to play, as the Chicago Bulls held onto the league's best record with a 102-100 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

With the score tied at 98-98 in the final minute, Jordan and Doug Christie traded jump shots before Jordan won the game with a short jumper from the right wing, rescuing the Bulls after they had blown a 12-point lead in the final six minutes.

"We like Michael to get the ball in that situation and extract what he can out of a defense," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. "And we've seen him make a lot of those shots in the playoffs."

Scottie Pippen scored a season-high 33 points and Dennis Rodman grabbed 18 rebounds for Chicago, which improved to 51-17, one win better than Seattle and Utah in the race for homecourt advantage throughtout the playoffs.

John Wallace scored 26 points, Marcus Camby added 23 and Christie 20 for the Raptors, who were swept in the season series for the first time. Despite winning 141 games over the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons, Chicago had lost to expansion Toronto in each of those campaigns.

"We escaped the dilemma we've had here the last couple of years, losing games in this building," added Jackson. "But it looked pretty dreadfull there in the fourth quarter as they came storming back. "I thought we were lackadasical when we got leads and didn't just grind it out and put them to sleep."

Raptors teenage rookie Tracy McGrady, who got just his fifth start of the season, tallied 12 points, nine rebounds, and season-highs of eight assists and five blocks.

"This was a chance for me to go out and play," said McGrady. "They (Bulls) are one of the best teams in the league. I went out there and I got a hot hand. The game is about having fun. When I'm having fun I feel more comfortable."

The Bulls led 90-78 after Jordan's dunk with 6:07 to play, but the Raptors fought back to tie the game with a 16-2 spurt, capped by Wallace's jumper with 2:01 left.

Chauncey Billups' two free throws gave Toronto a two-point lead but Chicago's Toni Kukoc answered with a three-pointer. Wallace's two free throws were countered by Rodman's three-point play before Billups' jumper tied the game at 98-98 with 41.6 seconds left.

Billups contributed 11 points and and Christie had nine rebounds for the Raptors, who shot 41 percent (40-of-96) from the field and held a 47-44 advantage on the boards.

The Raptors trailed early but used an 11-2 spurt to take a 22-19 lead with 1:05 to play in the first quarter on Christie's two free throws.

Chicago grabbed a 23-22 lead on a layup by Jordan, but Toronto answered with seven of the next nine points to take its biggest lead of the game, 31-25, on a dunk by Oliver Miller.

The teams traded baskets before Steve Kerr's jumper sparked a 14-2 run as the Bulls took a 41-35 advantage. Pippen scored eight points during the spurt, which he capped with a jumper with 5:25 to play in the period.

Chicago opened the second half with a 10-4 spurt, taking a 60-52 lead on Pippen's lay-in with 7:32 left in the third quarter. Jordan hit jumper to open the fourth and Rodman's two free throws gave the Bulls their biggest lead at 82-69 with 10:38 remaining.

"It was an ugly win for us, but we'll take it," said Pippen. "It was a win that we needed. We knew this team was going to come out and play us hard. I tried to establish the inside game. That's what Phil (Jackson) wanted us to do, was be able to take the ball to the basket hard and that's what I was trying to do."

The Bulls shot 46 percent (41-of-90), but connected on just 3-of-16 three-pointers.
