GAME RECAP

Michael Finley had 27 points, seven rebounds and seven assists to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 91-87 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Shawn Bradley and Hubert Davis added 16 points for the Mavericks, who trailed by 10 points entering the fourth quarter before rallying for their third win in four games. Dallas beat Minnesota for the second time this month to earn a split of the season series.

Anthony Peeler totaled 23 points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists for the Timberwolves, who opened a seven-game road trip by losing for the fifth time in seven games. Minnesota fell two games behind Houston for seventh place in the Western Conference.

"We didn't play very well in the first quarter," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We just kept getting better and better throughout the game. It's one of those games, we got it rolling."

Davis opened the fourth quarter with a jumper and Finley dunked before Khalid Reeves buried a three-pointer to bring the Mavericks within 71-68 just under two minutes into the period. After a timeout, Minnesota got a layup from Cherokee Parks, but that would be the Wolves' only basket in the first 6 1/2 minutes of the period.

Consecutive hook shots by Bradley sliced the deficit to 73-72 and sparked a decisive 13-0 burst. After a miss by Peeler on the other end, Reeves came up with a steal to set up Davis' three-pointer, making it 75-73 with 7:04 remaining. The Wolves called another timeout, but Finley and Davis knocked down consecutive jumpers before Davis' layup capped the spurt and gave the Mavericks their largest lead at 81-73 with 5:25 to play.

"The guys really stepped up ... Michael Finley, Khalid Reeves, A.C. (Green), they all did a great job picking up the offense and they gave us a lot of energy on the defensive end. It (the run) wasn't me, it was just great passes by Michael and Khalid."

Kevin Garnett's jumper finally gave Minnesota its second bucket of the period with 5:08 to play, igniting a 9-2 run. Garnett added a three-point play in the spurt and capped it himself with a jumper to bring the Wolves with 83-82 with 3:20 to go.

Dallas eventually got the lead back to four on a three-pointer with 48 seconds left, but Sam Mitchell converted a three-point play 14 seconds later to keep it a one-point game. But Eric Riley hit two foul shots and Finley added one for the final margin.

Minnesota led by as much as nine points in the first quarter before settling for a 24-20 advantage. The lead was still four midway through the second before the Wolves used a 10-2 spurt to open a 41-29 cushion on Peeler's jumper with 2:50 left in the half.

The lead was eight points at halftime before Minnesota opened the third period with a 7-2 run to take their largest lead at 51-38 on Mitchell's three-pointer 90 seconds into the quarter. Dallas could only get within 71-61 entering the final period.

Reeves finished with 10 points for the Mavericks, who shot 44 percent (36-of-81) from the field. Bradley's 12 rebounds paced Dallas' 49-42 advantage on the boards.

Mitchell had 19 points and tied a season high with 10 boards and Garnett had 15 points for the Wolves, who shot 41 percent (37-of-90).
