GAME RECAP

Eddie Jones scored 27 points and Shaquille O'Neal added 24 and nine rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers destroyed the Denver Nuggets for the fourth time this season, 107-86.

Kobe Bryant contributed 23 points as the Lakers defeated Denver for the eighth straight time and swept the season series, winning the four meetings by an average of 24 points. Los Angeles, which never trailed after the opening minutes, has won four straight games and 10-of-11 overall.

The Lakers remained within two games of the Seattle SuperSonics for the Pacific Division lead and first place in the Western Conference. Seattle defeated the Sacramento Kings tonight.

"We have only set one goal and that's to win the championship," Jones said. "We're still trying to find our rhythm as a team. We haven't had our whole team together for 30 games."

"Everybody is jockeying for playoff position, so our guys knew this was an important game for us," Bryant said. "This is the time where everybody needs to step up their game."

Danny Fortson scored 24 points to pace the Nuggets, who have lost four of their last five games after winning back-to-back contests for the first time this season. Denver (8-62) still needs two wins to avoid matching the worst single-season record in league history, set by the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, who finished 9-73.

"We did what we could do, but it wasn't enough," Fortson said. "I wish I could've played like this all year. That's why my game has stepped up, I don't want to be a part (of the record). This was a tough game, they have so many All-Stars."

The Nuggets were within 19-16 late in the opening quarter, but Los Angeles scored eight of the final 10 points of the period to take control. Bryant hit a driving layup with 30 seconds left to cap the spurt as the Lakers grabbed a 27-18 lead.

O'Neal hit a short jumper and Jones sank a pair of free throws to open the second period, increasing the advantage to 31-18. Anthony Goldwire, who scored 18 points, buried a three-pointer to trim the deficit to 44-36 with 2:23 left before halftime, but Los Angeles reeled off the next eight points. O'Neal made two free throws and Bryant drained a 13-footer to end that spurt, building the lead to 52-36.

Denver trailed 54-38 at the break and got no closer in the second half. Bryant and Jones scored nine points apiece in the third period as Los Angeles opened an 84-64 lead.

Bryant drilled a three-pointer with 6:38 to play, giving the Lakers their largest lead, 102-70.

"We did what we were supposed to do. We played a solid game," Lakers coach Del Harris said. "Kobe was outstanding tonight. That was the best game he's had in quite some time."

Los Angeles scored 30 points off 17 turnovers by the Nuggets, who managed just 14 points off 11 Laker turnovers.

"I thought we had some opportunities to get into the game, but turnovers killed us. They were kind of needless," Nuggets coach Bill Hanzlik said. "You can't give up 30 points off turnovers and expect to be in the game."

O'Neal and Jones combined to shoot 20-for-30 from the field, while the rest of the Lakers' starting five was just 5-of-16 from the floor. Bryant hit 8-of-12 shots as Los Angeles shot 49 percent (41-of-83) overall.

LaPhonso Ellis scored 16 points and Tony Battie chipped in 10 off the bench for Denver, which also shot 49 percent (36-of-73).
