GAME RECAP

Steve Smith scored eight of his 28 points in a crucial four-minute stretch of the final quarter and Mookie Blaylock had 11 points and four steals after missing three games with anemia as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Orlando Magic, 85-73.

The Magic pulled within 73-67 on a jumper by Mark Price with 6:24 to play, but Smith fueled a 12-0 outburst with two free throws and a pair of three-pointers as Atlanta pulled away.

"I didn't think I played bad in the first half," said Smith, who netted 11 points by the break. "I just had a better fourth quarter."

Tyrone Corbin, who supplied the four remaining points in the deciding surge, totaled 16 points and a season-high 12 boards for the Hawks, who posted their seventh straight home win.

Orlando, which fell a half-game behind Washington for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot, was without leading scorer Nick Anderson, who missed his second straight contest with a strained left hamstring. Derek Strong and Bo Outlaw led the way with 12 points apiece for the Magic, who shot 38 percent (30-of-78) from the floor.

"We couldn't make a shot, couldn't covert, struggled every possession (and) we turned it over even without harassment," said Orlando coach Chuck Daly, who was denied his 600th win. "We just simply threw the ball away. We just can't do that."

Atlanta, which countered with 43 percent (33-of-77) shooting, held a 48-34 rebounding edge while improving to 16-0 when its opponent shoots below 40 percent.

Smith's free throw ignited an 8-2 run in the third quarter as the Hawks opened a 57-49 lead. Orlando answered with eight straight points to force a tie before Blaylock, who was given a clean bill of health after undergoing a battery of tests for anemia, sank consecutive baskets to put Atlanta ahead for good after three quarters.

"It goes to show you that we need Mookie in the lineup cause we can play a little more up-tempo with him," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "Thank goodness he came back, because we needed him."

"It feels good (to be back), I was a little sluggish," conceded Blaylock. "I tried to go out there and perform and help get my team a win. It was a good win for the team. It will take a couple of practices before I'm back (in shape)."

Smith, who was 10-of-17 from the field and 6-for-6 from the line, almost singlehandedly yanked the momentum from Orlando after Price's jumper cut the deficit to six. After he and Corbin each sank two free throws, Smith stroked three-pointers 43 seconds apart before Corbin's jumper made it 85-67 with two minutes remaining.

The Hawks, who squandered a 34-28 second-quarter lead to fall behind 39-38 at the break, have won five of their last six home contests at home.
