GAME RECAP

Wesley Person hit a three-pointer with three-tenths of a second remaining to lift the Cleveland Cavaliers to an 88-87 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons, who had a season-high four-game winning streak snapped.

Vitaly Potapenko's three-point attempt from the left baseline hit off the front of the rim and the rebound came inside the three-point line at the right wing. Person, who missed a three-pointer at the end of regulations, wrestled the ball away from Detroit's Grant Hill and stepped back behind the arc to hit the winning shot that lifted the Cavaliers to their sixth win in seven games.

"I had a good shot at getting the ball," Person said. "I just stepped back and tried to create some distance and I got a good look at it. I thought I got a look at it right before regulation but the ball rimmed out. I got a second chance in the overtime and I knocked it down."

"Person just making a hustle play happen, he was determined to come up with the ball and makes a great, great shot," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello. "Wesley is a big-time shooter and makes big shots in big situations."

Shawn Kemp had 23 points 12 rebounds before fouling out with 38 seconds remaining and Person added 16 points and seven boards for the Cavaliers, who remained a half game behind the New York Knicks for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Brevin Knight handed out 14 assists and made 5-of-11 shots for 11 points as the Cavaliers played their third straight one-point game.

"The last two games have been fun and they really help us down the stretch if we get a playoff spot," Knight said. "I was under the basket when Person shot and I knew it was in before it hit the net that's why I raised my hands above my head."

Jerry Stackhouse scored 26 points and Hill added 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost two of three meetings to Cleveland this season.

"We had chances in regulation and overtime to pull away but we didn't," Hill said. "You have to give them credit. Even when Kemp got into foul trouble they still hung in there and got it to OT and they got the last shot. It was a great game to play in, a lot of fun, a lot of great plays and it came down to who had the ball with more seconds left."

The game featured 21 ties and 14 lead changes.

Both teams struggled in the extra session, with the Cavaliers shooting just 25 percent (2-for-8) and the Pistons making only 1-of-7 shots from the field.

Potapenko gave the Cavaliers an 85-83 edge when he made a hook shot in the lane, 47 seconds into the extra period. Hill, who was 7-of-7 from the free-throw line, made two foul shots to tie the game with 2:53 left. After Knight missed a 13-footer, Hill sank a 14-footer to give the Pistons an 87-85 lead with 2:07 to play. Detroit did not score again as Brian Williams missed a six-footer with 73 seconds remaining and Dumars could not hit a three-pointer with 26 seconds left.

Detroit held a 75-70 lead with 6:22 left in the fourth after Stackhouse made a pair of free throws. Kemp then scored five straight points to tie it 75-75 after he converted two free throws at the 4:17 mark. Dumars, who was 2-for-6 from behind the arc, made a 25-footer to give the Pistons a 78-75 lead with 3:57 left.

"I thought Kemp was tremendous for us tonight," Fratello said. "He got us so many opportunities to score either from the foul line or down inside."

Knight drove for a layup to pull the Cavaliers within 78-77 with 3:03 to play but Dumars answered with a 10-footer with 1:56 remaining. Kemp's layup cut Detroit's lead to 80-79 with 79 seconds to go and his free throws gave the Cavs an 81-80 lead 23 seconds later. Detroit regained the lead when Dumars converted two free throws with 40 seconds left. Kemp made a pair of free throws with 35 seconds remaining to put Cleveland up, 83-82, and Stackhouse tied it with one foul shot 12 seconds later.
