GAME RECAP

The Minnesota Timberwolves clinched the final playoff spot in the Western Conference as Sam Mitchell scored 22 points and Kevin Garnett added 17 and seven assists in a 100-98 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Stephon Marbury handed out 12 assists and scored 10 points and Anthony Peeler contributed 12 points for Minnesota, which won for the fourth time in five games. The Timberwolves made the playoffs for the second straight season after missing the postseason in the team's first eight campaigns.

Garnett, who only had two rebounds, preserved the win by blocking Rodney Rogers' jumper with nine seconds left. The Clippers had another chance to tie the game, but James Robinson missed a jumper at the buzzer.

"Knowing that this franchise had never been there, last year being our first time, it feels good to be able to get back there especially now," Marbury said. "We're playing good basketball now, we're playing together. I think we really weren't in a rhythm tonight."

"I couldn't find no rhythm," Garnett said. "The guys came in and told me I stunk it up tonight. But I said `Hey I got the big block when it counted, so y'all can kiss my tail.'

Lamond Murray had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Isaac Austin added 16 and 12 for the Clippers, who lost their fifth straight game. Rogers recorded 16 points and eight rebounds and Maurice Taylor scored 14 points off the bench for the Clippers, who outrebounded the Timberwolves, 44-30, and shot 51 percent (38-for-75) from the field.

"I never saw a ballgame where we had two unforced turnovers, six offensive rebounds against us and we were still in the game," said Los Angeles coach Bill Fitch. "We were one play away, one rebound, one turnover, from winning tonight. I'm very proud of the team tonight. One of the toughest things to do is to come out and forget that you have been losing and play hard. They played their butts off tonight."

Cherokee Parks and Tom Hammonds each scored 11 points for the Wolves, who committed just six turnovers and scored 18 points off 18 turnovers by the Clippers.

The Clippers closed within 99-98 when Taylor hit a pair of free throws with 2:31 remaining. Minnesota then kept the lead with several key offensive rebounds. Mitchell missed a 17-footer, but Peeler grabbed the rebound and passed to Marbury. After Marbury missed a driving layup, Mitchell grabbed it and missed a 19-footer. Hammonds came up with the ball and passed to Marbury, who missed a three-pointer. The Clippers finally regained possession as Taylor rebounded and passed to Darrick Martin.

Martin, who had 13 points and eight assists, missed a 20-footer with 46 seconds to go. Garnett missed a 16-footer but Mitchell came up with another rebound and passed to Marbury. After getting fouled by Martin, Marbury sank one free throw for the final margin with 19 seconds left.
