GAME RECAP

Cliff Robinson scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Phoenix Suns kept pace in the Western Conference and sent the Vancouver Grizzlies to their 14th straight road loss, 106-98.

Antonio McDyess had 18 points and five of Phoenix's season-high 14 blocks and Kevin Johnson and Steve Nash collected 15 points each for the Suns, who remained two games behind fourth-place San Antonio in the West. The fourth-place team gets homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Danny Manning had season highs of four blocks and five steals for Phoenix, which beat Vancouver for the third time this season and the ninth time in 11 all-time meetings. Johnson also had 11 assists.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim finished with 30 points -- but just two in the fourth quarter -- and 12 rebounds to lead the Grizzlies, who have not won on the road since January 23rd at Golden State and have lost 18 of 21 overall.

"Phoenix attacks you on defense and you have to play them by taking what they give you," said Abdur-Rahim. "I just took what they gave me and tried not to force anything."

Vancouver's Blue Edwards chipped in 19 points and Bryant Reeves managed 15, snapping his streak of 30-point games at three.

"This was a good win for us," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "We played good defense in the interior and did a great job on `Big Country" (Reeves), but we need to do a better job of taking care of the ball in the open court. Vancouver is a team that is playing well. They played us tough, very similar to the way they have been against all the teams in the league."

Phoenix shot 54 percent (39-of-72) from the field while holding Vancouver to 48 percent (39-of-82). The Suns turned 20 turnovers by the Grizzlies into 26 points, overcoming a 40-30 disadvantage on the boards.

Reeves' two free throws with 5:54 remaining gave Vancouver a 90-87 lead. Two free throws by Johnson and a fast-break jumper by Manning gave the Suns the lead 44 seconds later.

Baskets by Reeves and Johnson -- his 13,000th career point -- preceded a basket by George Lynch that gave Vancouver its last lead at 94-93 with 4:21 left.

Following Lynch's basket, Phoenix scored five straight points on a free throw by Robinson, a jumper by Manning and an 18-footer from Johnson, making it 98-94 with 1:56 remaining.

Edwards and Dennis Scott traded layups before a shot in the lane by Reeves with a minute to go pulled the Grizzlies within 100-98. But Vancouver committed turnovers on their next two possessions and did not score again.

"Four of our last six possessions were turnovers and I am at a loss for words," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "I'm not putting the blame on my guys, but the bottom line is that we just have to get it done. When the game is on the line we can't become tentative. Overall, we are just doing a poor job of executing."

The Suns added two free throws apiece by Johnson, McDyess and Robinson down the stretch.

"When Vancouver is playing well they can be just as good as any team in the NBA," Nash said. "I'm glad we hung in there and played with enough enthusiasm to pull out the victory. We struggled a little bit, but we got it going enough to win. We played hard, and in the end, that will always pay off for a team with our talent."
