GAME RECAP

Horace Grant scored eight of his 16 points in a decisive spurt as the Orlando Magic continued their playoff push with a 95-68 victory over the shorthanded lowly Toronto Raptors, who were held to the lowest total in franchise history.

The Magic (37-35) are just 5-6 in the their last 11 contests but moved one-half game ahead of the New Jersey Nets in the race for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot with 10 games left.

The Raptors were without suspended forwards Marcus Camby and Gary Trent and broke the club record of 69 points, also against Orlando, on April 10th, 1997. Toronto, which owns the worst record in the Eastern Conference, has lost five straight games and 12 of 14.

"The defense was terrible, the shooting was terrible," Toronto guard Dee Brown said. "Sometimes you play games like that. Sometimes you can say at least you did this right or you did that right. There's not one basketball thing we did right today."

"They did things that young teams do," Raptors coach Butch Carter said. "That resulted from a lack of aggression and a lack of focus. The franchise low speaks for itself."

It was the top defensive effort of the season for the Magic, whose previous low came in a 74-69 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on January 5th. Orlando improved to 3-1 against Toronto this season and avenged a 115-107 triple-overtime loss to the Raptors in Orlando on February 27th.

"That's how we've been able to win games all year long, by trying to hold other teams down," Magic guard Mark Price said. "We're just trying to stay alive and there are three teams fighting for the last spot."

"We took out the stats sheet from our last game vs. Toronto and showed them," said Orlando coach Chuck Daly. "They knew what happened. This was a game we needed to win. They trap and you have to be ready for them. You have to credit our defensive rebounding. Of late, we've rotated more players in and they've done a good job."

With Orlando holding a 32-28 lead midway through the second quarter, a jumper by Kevin Edwards ignited a 23-6 run that carried into the second half.

Grant scored eight points in the decisive spurt, including a jumper that gave the Magic a 55-34 with 6:42 left in the third quarter.

"In the middle of the third quarter, I got hot," said Grant. "The guys found me and we were able to put this one out of reach. Once we got the 20-point lead we felt comfortable."

"He is a superb captain and has done everything asked of him," said Daly. "He's right there and is as solid as a rock."

Trent and Camby both were suspended one game without pay and fined $5,000 and $2,500, respectively, by the NBA for leaving the bench during a fight in Thursday's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Doug Christie scored 20 points for the Raptors, who shot only 31 percent (25-of-81) from the field and were outrebounded, 51-39. John Wallace added 11 points and Oliver Miller had 11 rebounds for Toronto.

The lead changed hands seven times in the first quarter before Toronto grabbed its last advantage at 19-18 on Brown's dunk with 28 seconds left in the period.

Derek Strong added 13 points and 13 rebounds for Orlando, which opened the second period with a 10-0 burst, taking a 28-19 lead on Danny Schayes' layup with 9:22 remaining. Christie's jumper pulled Toronto within 32-28 with 7:12 left in the half.

The closest Toronto came in the second half was 63-50 at the end of the third quarter. Orlando built its largest lead at 95-66 on Edwards' jumper with 49 seconds to play.

"If we have a chance to win the game, we have to play good defense," added Price. "The nights you struggle, the only way you win is by keeping the other guys from scoring."
