GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan scored 30 points and Toni Kukoc added 19 as the Chicago Bulls used a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to defeat the Milwaukee Bucks, 104-87, for their ninth straight win.

Luc Longley returned from a 13-game injury absence to score 14 points and Dennis Rodman grabbed 17 rebounds to go along with seven points for Bulls, who have taken 11 straight meetings from the Bucks, including all four this season. Milwaukee last defeated Chicago on April 23rd, 1995.

"We swept the season series against the Bucks which is always difficult to do," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. We kind of got bogged down defensively (at times). Longley looked tired in the second quarter.

The Bulls played their second straight game without star forward Scottie Pippen, who did not travel with the team due to the flu.

"Scottie Burrell was extremely aggressive (in place of Pippen)," Jackson said. "We anticipate Pippen to be back on Tuesday."

Chicago (55-17) is 21-2 since the All-Star break and opened a one-game lead over Utah in the race for the NBA's best record and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs. The Bulls must finish ahead of the Jazz, who won the season series between the teams.

Ray Allen scored 27 points and Michael Curry added 18 for the injury-riddled Bucks, who have dropped 12 of their last 13 games and are a season-worst 11 games .500. Milwaukee is without starters Glenn Robinson, Terrell Brandon and Tyrone Hill.

"We didn't shoot the ball well at all, but we battled," Bucks coach Chris Ford said. "The only hope we had was to shoot a high percentage. Playing three down is tough."

"It's always a challenging matchup and I look forward to it," Allen said of his confrontation with Jordan. "You just have to focus on the job at hand and remember you have a job to do."

Allen opened the fourth quarter with a layup that pulled the Bucks within 76-70, but the Bulls took control with a 17-6 burst, including nine in a row to close it. Kukoc and Burrell connected on consecutive layups to give Chicago a 10-point lead, and after a short jumper by Armon Gilliam, Kukoc hit a layup to make it 82-72.

Ricky Pierce made two free throws, but Kukoc ignited the 9-0 spurt with a jumper and layup as the Bulls grabbed an 88-74 advantage with 6:50 remaining. A three-pointer by Burrell and Rodman's layup gave Chicago its largest lead at 91-74 with 4:33 left. Milwaukee got no closer than 15 points thereafter.

"They scrapped out a good game and we did not click until the second half," said Jordan. "Luc gave us the ability in the middle and its great to have him back. If Scottie stays sick, we have to fight without him."

Burrell and Dickey Simpkins contributed 11 points apiece for the Bulls, who shot 51 percent (46-of-90) from the field and held a 45-42 rebounding advantage.

Gilliam scored 15 points for Milwaukee, which shot 42 percent (35-of-84) and committed 19 turnovers which led to 21 Chicago points. Ervin Johnson collected 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Bucks.

Steve Kerr scored nine of his 11 points in the first half, including a three-pointer with 3:14 to play that gave Chicago a 43-32 lead. But Milwaukee fought back within 48-40 at halftime.
