GAME RECAP

Rick Fox scored a season-high 31 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the surging Los Angeles Lakers began a pivotal road trip with their 13th win in 15 games, 114-105 over the Toronto Raptors in a game played at Maple Leaf Gardens.

Fox, who was born in Toronto, made 10-of-21 floor shots and 10-of-11 from the line, eclipsing his previous high of 30 set December 12th against Houston and matched January 30th against Minnesota.

"I think we have the stuff," Fox said. "It's not like I'm going to score a lot of points for this team but there are nights I'm going to be emotionally charged. I had to realize that taking people off the dribble is a strength. It's always nice to come back to Toronto."

"Rick was outstanding and played good basketball in the second half," Lakers coach Del Harris said. "He uses his dribble to create things for himself and his teammates."

Shaquille O'Neal collected 20 points and 13 boards, Kobe Bryant scored 17 points in three quarters and Robert Horry grabbed 12 rebounds for the Lakers, who have beaten Toronto five times in six meetings, including both games this season. Bryant sat out the fourth quarter with a strained left hip joint and is listed as day-to-day.

The Lakers, with three double-figure rebounders, held a 49-43 edge on the boards. They also turned 19 Toronto turnovers into 23 points and outshot the Raptors from the field, 50 percent (40-for-80) to 45 percent (37-for-82).

Los Angeles (52-20) remained within two games of Seattle, which beat Utah tonight and leads the Pacific Division. The Lakers, who also visit New Jersey, Cleveland and Detroit on this trip, improved to 22-13 on the road.

"We knew this would be a tough game because the Raptors have played us well," Harris said. "They tend to get up for the big teams. Toronto has good players, but they are young, and it's difficult for young teams to win. We are young, but we have Shaq."

Chauncey Billups had 21 points and six assists and Doug Christie added 20 points for the Raptors, who played at smaller, noisier Maple Leaf Gardens for the first time this season but dropped their sixth straight game and went 2-13 in March.

"You can't say enough for the instant gratification," said Toronto coach Butch Carter, whose team plays most of its home games in the spacious SkyDome. "It's tough in the dome. The sound gets lost in the 30 stories."

Fox scored 14 points in the first quarter, including a layup in the final second to give the Lakers the lead at 25-24.

John Wallace pulled the Raptors into a 25-25 tie after making one of two free throws 19 seconds into the second quarter, but Los Angeles regained the lead for good when Bryant turned a drive into a three-point play.

The Lakers expanded their lead later in the quarter with a 17-4 spurt, with Bryant contributing five points. O'Neal opened the burst with a dunk and Eddie Jones also dunked to cap it at 47-33 with 4:51 left in the half.

Toronto put together an 8-3 run, capped by a free throw by Christie, to draw within 56-50 with 21 seconds left, but Derek Fisher drained a three-pointer with just under four seconds remaining to put the Lakers up by nine at the half.

Gary Trent's layup with 3:14 left in the third quarter cut the deficit to 79-74, but the Lakers scored 11 of the next 17 points to open a 90-80 bulge entering the final period.

The Raptors cut the deficit to 100-94 with 5:36 remaining when Alvin Williams closed an 8-2 spurt with a pair of free throws. But Toronto got no closer.

"A lot of times we get down, but this is a team that always fights back," Billups said. "That's what I like about this team. We're better than we look some days. We just have to play with more consistentcy. The Lakers are all over the TV shows. They're a show when they come to town."
