GAME RECAP

Chris Mullin scored 24 points and led a ferocious assault from three-point range as the Indiana Pacers ravaged the Los Angeles Clippers, 128-106, two days after posting the lowest scoring total since the advent of the shot clock.

Without leading scorers Reggie Miller and Rik Smits on Sunday, the Pacers went down to a 74-55 home loss to San Antonio. Despite Smits' continued absence with a foot injury, the Pacers posted their second-best offensive output of the season against the league's worst defensive team.

"We just wanted to make sure we scored over 55 points," Pacers swingman Jalen Rose said. "Everybody came to the party with a two-drink minimum. We hope to sustain this, but you never know what can happen tomorrow. I think we are on the way."

"We took a butt-kicking tonight," affirmed Clippers coach Bill Fitch. "They beat us in every way a team can be beat. Someone had to pay for that 55 points they had in their last game."

Mullin nailed all six three-point attempts and Miller, returning from an one-game league suspension, netted 19 points and went 5-of-7 from three-point range as the Pacers made a team-record 14-of-24 shots from beyond the arc.

Indiana had seven players in double figures and surpassed Sunday's anemic effort when Antonio Davis' driving layup extended the lead to 57-46 with 2:17 left in the first half. They held a 104-75 advantage after three quarters and fell five points shy of their season high against Charlotte on Friday.

Davis, starting for Smits in the pivot, collected 19 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Mark Jackson totaled 11 points and 15 assists and rookie Austin Croshere managed a season-high 17 points as the Pacers shot a season-high 57 percent (51-of-90) from the field.

Rose and Dale Davis each chipped in with 12 points for Indiana, which reached 50 wins for the third time in franchise history, all in the last four years.

Lamond Murray scored 21 points and Maurice Taylor added 20 off the bench for Los Angeles, which suffered its 11th straight loss to Indiana.

The Pacers used a 14-2 spurt that featured two three-pointers by Mullin and five points by Jackson before Miller's bucket from beyond the arc provided a 25-12 cushion with 4:19 left in the first quarter.

"I feel blessed for being here in Indiana," said Jackson. "I have been in the league for over 11 years and this is the best. Fans, players, coach (Larry) Bird and his staff, always enjoy the game and they instill that in us. I'm having a good time."

Los Angeles managed to narrow the deficit to nine with 2:17 to go in the second quarter on Pooh Richardson's layup but got no closer as Indiana scored 16 of the next 20 points to assume a 71-50 lead at the break.

Miller was 4-for-4 and Mullin 3-of-3 from three-point range in the first half as the Pacers hit 9-of-11 (82 percent) from behind the arc over the first 24 minutes.

Indiana kept the pressure on in the second half, taking its biggest lead at 112-79 with 9:55 left to play when Dale Davis dunked. Davis was the only starter to see action in the final period as coach Larry Bird gave Mullin, Miller, Jackson and Antonio Davis a well-deserved rest.

"I thought our ball movement was excellent tonight," Bird said. "We were able to get guys out and they were hitting the shots. I thought our spacing was great. We usually hit our share of three-pointers."

The Pacers' 14 three-pointers surpassed their previous best of 11, last reached against Charlotte on Friday.

The Clippers, who entered allowing opponents a league-high 103.6 points per game, lost for the sixth time in seven games and dropped their sixth in a row at Market Square Arena. They are winless against the Pacers since January 8th, 1992.

Los Angeles was without starting guard Eric Piatkowski, who is out with an abdominal strain.

"Our locker room looks like a MASH unit right now," lamented Fitch.
