GAME RECAP

Shawn Respert, who was signed just four days ago, scored five of Dallas' final seven points and made a crucial defensive play as the Mavericks pulled out a 104-101 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies, sweeping the season series.

Vancouver trailed the entire contest but was within 97-96 with 1:42 remaining after Blue Edwards buried a three-pointer. The Grizzlies had a chance to tie but Dallas' Erick Strickland stole the ball from Shareef Abdur-Rahim with 42 seconds to go.

Respert began to take over by draining a 15-footer and, after a layup by Bryant Reeves cut the deficit back to one, he made one of two from the foul line with 20 seconds left for a 100-98 lead. Abdur-Rahim, who scored 23 points, drove to the basket but again was stripped by Strickland.

"It was kind of a double-option plan. Shareef was supposed to get the ball in the corner," Reeves explained. "If I was open, he was supposed to throw it in. If not, he was supposed to try to take it to the rim. I thought I was open, he had a different look at it."

Michael Finley hit two free throws for a four-point edge, but Bobby Hurley drove the lane and fed Reeves, who hit the layup and was fouled by Respert. Reeves sank the foul shot to pull Vancouver within 102-101 with 6.6 seconds left, but Respert answered with two free throws.

As Hurley appeared to attempt a potential tying three-pointer, Respert made the steal and knocked the ball out of bounds off Hurley. Respert received the inbounds pass and dribbled out the clock as Dallas improved to 11-1 all-time against Vancouver.

"It felt great, I've gone through a lot this year," Respert said. "It seemed like every time I got ready to get over that hump, something would happen. I know one game doesn't make a difference, but hopefully this is a step in the right direction."

Finley and A.C. Green scored 22 points apiece for the Mavs, who have won five of their last eight games. Respert finished with 14 points in his third game with Dallas after inking a 10-day deal on Friday, a week after getting released by Toronto.

"We hit our free throws going down the stretch," Green said. "We contested and pressured most of their shots and got the big rebounds when we needed to."

Reeves scored 17 points and Tony Massenburg added 16 for the Grizzlies, who have lost 11 of their last 12 games and fell 2 1/2 games behind the Mavs for fifth place in the Midwest Division.

"It's very disappointing for us to lose this game," Reeves said. "This was a game that we looked at and thought that we should get a win. ... We didn't come out with the intensity we needed tonight."

Green scored 12 points in the opening period as Dallas took the lead for good, 29-21. Vancouver reeled off nine straight points early in the second quarter to get within 33-30. Massenburg scored four of the final six points in that spurt, including a dunk with 8:39 remaining to cut it to three.

"We had to try to take advantage of our speed and get back into the game after a poor start," Massenburg said. "We had our chances to win, but we didn't execute as well as we should have on offense. Some of our early mistakes really came back to haunt us."

Dallas used a 15-4 run late in the period to retake control. Hubert Davis scored seven of his 13 points in that burst, including a three-pointer that capped it for a 58-44 lead.

Green scored 10 more points in the third quarter as Dallas took an 84-71 lead into the final period. But he was held scoreless in the fourth quarter as Vancouver came back, reeling off a 13-3 run early in the period. Massenburg dunked to cap the spurt, pulling the Grizzlies within 91-89 with 5:18 to go.

"They made their big run in the fourth but we kept our heads, and as a result, came out with the win," Finley said.

Michael Smith and George Lynch grabbed 13 rebounds apiece to lead Vancouver to a 48-36 edge on the boards. The Grizzlies shot 52 percent (40-of-77) from the field and held Dallas to 44 percent (41-of-94), but committed 17 turnovers.

Eric Riley had 12 boards, eight points and five blocks for the Mavs, who committed just eight turnovers and scored 20 points off Vancouver's miscues.
