Game Recap

Jeff Hornacek scored 20 of his season-high 31 points in the second half and Karl Malone added 29 as the Utah Jazz reclaimed a share of the top spot in the Western Conference with a 98-89 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Following an 88-86 loss in Seattle on Tuesday, the Jazz (54-17) climbed into a tie with the SuperSonics for first place in the West. John Stockton contributed 14 points and eight assists for Utah, which has won seven straight at home and 17 of 19 overall.

"I was pleased with our guys after playing a hard game last night," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "I know there was a time or two that our energy didn't look as good as I thought it should but this team is not 19 or 20 years old."

Hornacek had 13 points in the third quarter when the Jazz took a 71-65 lead. Portland tied it, 77-77, midway through the fourth quarter, but the Jazz answered with a 9-2 spurt. Stockton made two free throws, Malone scored five straight points and Hornacek hit a layup for an 86-79 edge with 3:55 remaining.

"There was a couple of shots I wouldn't normally take in our offense, but since I was making shots, I took them," said Hornacek, who was 11-of-16 from the field. "After a while there, the guys were looking for me when I was coming off a pick."

Damon Stoudamire, who scored 22 points, hit a jumper to pull the Trail Blazers within 88-83, but Stockton answered with a three-point play and Malone added a pair of foul shots. Portland got no closer than eight points the rest of the way and missed a chance to sweep the series from the Jazz for the first time in 23 seasons.

Portland, which had won four in a row against Utah, played without guard Isaiah Rider, who was suspended by the team for one game after arriving late to practice on Tuesday. The Trail Blazers also lost starting center Arvydas Sabonis, who suffered an injured right hip, in the second quarter. Portland was outrebounded 22-16 in the second half after amassing a 26-15 edge after 24 minutes.

"I thought that being shorthanded the way we were that our guys battled and did a good job on the boards," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We broke down in some areas defensively late in the game and late on the shot clock which let them make some plays. They are a team you can't fall down against at any point of time."

Rasheed Wallace scored 18 points and Brian Grant pulled down 14 rebounds for Portland, which had its three-game winning streak snapped and sits just two games in front of Minnesota for sixth place in the West.

The Trail Blazers led through much of the first half and took a 47-43 halftime edge, but playing without Sabonis the rest of the way definitely seemed to take its toll. Sabonis had eight points and four rebounds in 13 minutes but was not around as the Blazers suffered their fourth straight loss against teams with winning records.

"I think that Sabonis' injury affected us a little bit," Stoudamire said. "A lot of our offense is on him and with him on the court it makes it so offensively we don't have to work as hard. Without him on the court, we don't have that weapon."

Trailing 55-51 with 8:03 left in the third period, Utah reeled off a 9-2 run to take control. Hornacek scored five points in that spurt, including a jumper to cap it for a 60-57 edge with 5:25 remaining. The Blazers never retook the lead.

"He's got a quick trigger and any clean kind of look that he seemed to get, he put the ball in the hole for them," Dunleavy said.

Malone, who grabbed eight rebounds, made 11-of-12 free throws as the Jazz hit 23-of-26 from the line overall. It was the first time in 16 games and just the second time in the last 37 contests overall that Malone has not led Utah in scoring.
