Game Recap

Larry Johnson scored all 11 of his third-quarter points in the decisive run and finished with 21 as the New York Knicks rebounded from a pair of blowout losses with an 81-70 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Allan Houston, who scored 17 points, sparked the pivotal 22-4 run by hitting a free throw with 8:46 left in the third quarter, tying the game at 42-42. Johnson followed with a tip-in and later highlighted the burst with a three-pointer. To cap the run, Johnson made two free throws and a jumper before Charlie Ward scored following a goaltending call on Isaac Austin. Ward's basket gave New York its largest lead, 63-46, with 1:55 remaining.

The Clippers, who got no closer than nine points the rest of the way, suffered their seventh loss in eight games.

"We got off to a slow start tonight, but we kept our energy level high and eventually it paid off for us," Houston said. "It's not hard to get up for games like these late in the season. We have to approach each game with the same kind of intensity."

Charles Oakley contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who suffered a 104-78 loss in Seattle to close a four-game road trip before dropping a 95-78 decision to San Antonio on Tuesday. New York moved within 1 1/2 games of Cleveland for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Austin had 18 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Clippers, who were held to their lowest point total of the season. Los Angeles, which suffered a 77-76 setback at home to the Knicks just 10 days ago, fell to 6-31 on the road.

"We needed to play better defense. We didn't play any at all and they did," Austin said. "They made stops when they had to and we didn't. It's just that simple."

The Clippers were playing without forwards Rodney Rogers and Maurice Taylor, both of whom suffered injuries in Tuesday's 128-106 loss at Indiana.

Los Angeles was unable to overcome a subpar shooting effort and some sloppy play on offense. The Clippers shot 36 percent (25-of-70) from the field and made just 5-of-20 three-pointers, including a 2-for-8 effort by Lamond Murray, who scored 14 points. They also committed 22 turnovers which resulted in 29 points for the Knicks.

"We played good defnese," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We forced some turnovers. I thought our transition defense was terrific tonight."

New York turned it over 13 times but Los Angeles managed just 13 points off those miscues. The Knicks, who matched their second-best defensive effort of the season, shot 42 percent (33-of-79) from the floor and sank 12-of-13 from the foul line.

Los Angeles reeled off the game's first nine points, a spurt capped by a 13-footer from Austin just under three minutes into the contest.

But the Knicks responded with a 12-2 burst, capped by Johnson's jumper for a 12-11 lead. Oakley finished with eight points in the period as New York took a 23-18 lead.

"It seemed like every time I looked up, Oakley got good looks," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "He got too many good looks when he was out there and when we were sagging, Oakley hit the open shots. Their players did the job today."

The Clippers trailed 39-33 at the half but opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run to go in front. Austin sank four free throws during that spurt before a three-pointer by Murray gave Los Angeles a 42-41 edge, but that turned out to be the Clippers' last lead of the game.
