Game Recap

Rasheed Wallace scored 27 points and Stacey Augmon had four of his season-high 18 in a decisive third-quarter run as the Portland Trail Blazers continued their mastery of the Dallas Mavericks with a 109-102 victory.

Brian Grant netted 20 points and a career-high 20 rebounds for Portland, which has won 11 straight games over the Mavericks since a 102-90 setback on April 15th, 1995. The Trail Blazers, who already clinched a playoff spot, lead Minnesota by 3 1/2 games for sixth place in the Western Conference.

"Brian did well with Sabas (Arvydas Sabonis) out," said Wallace. "Everybody stepped up and played well. They are a fast-breaking team, so we knew that it was going to be a horserace."

Isaiah Rider, who missed Wednesday's game while serving a one-game suspension for arriving late to practice, contributed nine points, six assists and five rebounds off the bench but shot 4-of-14 from the field in 33 minutes. Portland has won four of its last five games.

"We don't need to harp on what happened with J.R.," said Blazers point guard Damon Stoudamire. "When he is in the lineup, we are a better team. Down the stretch, I think that he will be there for us. We made the extra pass to get open looks and we were able to make shots."

Michael Finley scored 32 points and Hubert Davis added a season-best 25 for Dallas, which is 7-31 on the road and has lost four of its last five games.

The Mavericks jumped to a quick 10-4 lead, but a late 9-3 run by Portland provided a 27-24 lead after one quarter. The Blazers led 54-51 at halftime before a layup by Finley pulled Dallas within 56-54.

But Portland broke open the game with a 10-2 run over a 3:49 span. Wallace triggered the burst with a dunk before Rider added a layup to make it 60-54 with 9:23 to go in the third quarter.

A.C. Green countered with a jumper, but Augmon had a pair of layups around a basket by Grant, giving the Blazers a 66-56 advantage with 7:10 remaining. Dallas was unable to draw closer than the final margin.

With Mavericks coach Don Nelson opting for a smaller lineup, Portland had its way on the boards, rolling to a 44-29 advantage. The Blazers also outscored Dallas, 62-32, in the paint and had 18 second-chance points.

"We had an advantage in the post," said Grant. "We got the rebounds and were able to run the floor. It was fun pulling down 20 rebounds. I need to thank my teammates, but tonight was a team win and we needed it."

Stoudamire had 18 points and 10 assists for Portland, which shot 55 percent (46-of-84) from the field and totaled 28 assists.

Mavs center Shawn Bradley picked up five fouls in the first 12:55 of the game, but amazingly did not foul out and finished with two points and two blocked shots.

Green had 10 of the Mavs' 29 rebounds. Shawn Respert netted 13 points and Khalid Reeves added 11 and seven assists for Dallas, which shot 52 percent (40-of-77) from the field.

"They played exceptionally well," said Green. "We knew they were capable of doing it. They just came out and got the job done tonight. They did it, they did a great job."
