Game Recap

Rod Strickland had 22 points and 11 assists as the Washington Wizards snapped a four-game losing streak and inched closer to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a 120-112 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Juwan Howard added 20 points and Chris Webber contributed 19 and 11 rebounds for Washington, which finally snapped out of a funk and tied Orlando for ninth place in the East, moving within one-half game of New Jersey for the eighth playoff spot.

"We just needed a win," Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "Sometimes when you're struggling you get up tight. You want it but the energy isn't there. It doesn't matter how you get it, but they got it tonight."

Dee Brown had his best game as a Raptor, finishing with 30 points, but that was not enough to prevent Toronto from dropping its eighth straight game. The Raptors, who have lost 15 of 17 overall, own the worst record in the East at 15-58.

"We could have won this one, but everyone wasn't there at the end," Brown said. "We're all not on the same page."

Clinging to a 65-64 lead early in the third period, Washington took control by reeling off seven straight points. After Calbert Cheaney and Rod Strickland hit back-to-back layups, Tracy Murray drained a three-pointer with 6:02 left for a 72-64 advantage.

Murray finished with 19 points and Cheaney chipped in 15 as Washington ended a three-game home losing streak and rebounded from an embarrassing 112-91 home loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Brown buried one of his six three-pointers to trim the deficit to 97-91 with 6:14 to play, but the Wizards answered with another 7-0 run. Webber had a free throw and jumper before Strickland hit a layup and two foul shots to extend the lead to 104-91 with 4:19 remaining.

"They (Toronto) could have sneaked up on us tonight, but we came back," Webber said. "This team will not give up. Now's not the time to die. Wins bring back confidence and now we just need to push it."

Toronto got no closer than nine points thereafter and lost its fifth straight trip to Washington. The Raptors have dropped all three meetings with the Wizards this season and have not won in Washington since November 18th, 1995.

"We ended up getting tired at the end. Overall it was a good effort," Raptors coach Butch Carter said. "Dee Brown stepped up and showed people what kind of professional he is."

Terry Davis scored all nine of his points in the opening period, lifting the Wizards to a 26-19 advantage.

Trailing 40-33 midway through the second quarter, Toronto used a 16-2 burst to take the lead. Brown drained a pair of three-pointers and John Wallace scored six of his 19 points in that spurt, including a three-point play that capped it for a 49-42 edge with 3:57 left before halftime.

Washington faced a 53-46 deficit with less than two minutes left but ripped off the final 10 points of the second quarter to take the lead for good. Howard sparked that spurt with a layup and a jumper and, after Chris Whitney sank four foul shots, he fed Cheaney for a dunk with 3.1 seconds left to make it 56-53 at the half.

"Tonight is over, we got the ugly win," Howard said. "Now we have to fight every night to stay alive. It doesn't matter how we play, as long as we get the win."

Ben Wallace tied a career high with 13 boards off the bench as Washington outrebounded the Raptors, 53-44. The Wizards made just 25-of-42 free throws and shot 47 percent (46-of-97) from the field, but scored 26 points off 15 Toronto turnovers.

Marcus Camby had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Raptors, who managed just eight points off Washington's 11 turnovers. Brown was 11-of-18 from the field and Toronto shot 51 percent (45-of-88) overall.

The Raptors were without center Oliver Miller, who was suspended for one game for a violation of team rules.
