Game Recap

Alan Henderson and Mookie Blaylock each scored 22 points as the Atlanta Hawks continued their strong play at home with a 107-87 rout of the Houston Rockets, who have lost five straight games.

Eldridge Recasner added a season-high 21 points for the Hawks, who have won 10 of their last 11 home games. Atlanta, which was without starting forward Christian Laettner and starting guard Steve Smith, never trailed and remained three games behind the Charlotte Hornets for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

Dikembe Mutombo grabbed 14 rebounds and Anthony Miller came off the bench to record season highs of 12 points and eight boards, helping the Hawks to a big 53-30 rebounding edge.

"I thought going into tonight's game there were certain basic things that we had to do," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "We had to get to (Hakeem) Olajuwon quickly, to (Kevin) Willis quickly and then have good rotation so their outside shooters didn't get any outside shots. I thought that our defense really set the tone. Every practice we work on shooting."

"We're playing well going into the playoffs," said Hawks forward Tyrone Corbin, who scored seven points. "It's only going to help us with more people feeling good about the way we're playing as a team."

Hakeem Olajuwon had 15 points and seven rebounds and Emanual Davis added 13 off the bench for the Rockets, who lost for the sixth time in seven games. Charles Barkley came off the bench to tally 11 points and six rebounds for Houston, which has already clinched a playoff spot.

The Rockets have lost three straight on the road and remained one game behind the Minnesota Timberwolves for seventh place in the West.

"I think it's a combination of us being out of synch, the guys coming in and out which is natural, and also being mentally and physically fatigued," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "And our confidence level is down, so it's not a real good situation but we've got to find a way. The season's not going to stop. We've got the best team in the league coming in. It's going to be a challenge. We've got it look at the big picture and keep plugging away, get our chemistry back and be healthy at the end of the year."

Houston's starting backcourt of Clyde Drexler and Matt Maloney was limited to 13 points on 4-for-17 shooting from the field.

Barkley and Mario Elie combined on an 8-0 spurt in the third quarter that pulled the Rockets within eight points. Barkley began the run with a layup and a pair of free throws and Elie followed with consecutive dunks to make it 63-55 with 2:24 to play.

But Blaylock sank an 18-footer for a 65-55 advantage 17 seconds later and Houston did not close within eight points thereafter.

Blaylock hit a three-pointer to cap a 10-1 surge and increase Atlanta's lead to 86-68 with 7:58 left in the fourth period. The Hawks had their biggest lead at 104-80 when Chris Crawford made two free throws with 1:58 to play.

Henderson scored eight points in the first period as the Hawks took a 25-17 lead. Brent Price sank a three-pointer to cap a 9-1 burst and pull the Rockets within 29-26 with 9:27 left in the second quarter.

Houston had a chance to get within a point, but Othella Harrington missed a driving layup 57 seconds later. Henderson hit a pair of free throws at the 8:42 mark and Recasner sank a 16-footer 25 seconds later to give Atlanta a 33-26 lead.

Recasner had a three-pointer to cap a 7-1 burst for a 42-31 cushion with 4:29 left. He scored 10 points in the period and Atlanta held a 49-35 lead at the break.
