Game Recap

Stephon Marbury's layup with 23.4 seconds remaining lifted the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 97-96 victory and their first-ever season sweep of the Atlanta Hawks.

Minnesota trailed by 10 points early in the fourth quarter and was still behind 94-90 after Dikembe Mutombo's hook with 1:51 to play. Marbury answered with a three-pointer 21 seconds later, but Mutombo hit two foul shots with 68 seconds left to make it 96-93.

Terry Porter's layup closed the gap to one point with 54 seconds to go and Atlanta's Mookie Blaylock missed a layup before Marbury delivered the game-winner. Mutombo was off on a hook with approximately five seconds remaining and Blaylock snared the rebound but could not get off a shot in time.

"I missed the shot, that is it," said Mutombo. "With a couple of seconds left, I took the hook and missed it."

"I was trying to make him come out, bounce him and try to make him spin, move him once he came off the block," said Minnesota forward Kevin Garnett, who was defending Mutombo. "I was going to work like hell just to keep the ball out of his hands, but he got it. I tried to put a hand in his face, jump as high as I could and he missed it. When I got the rebound, Mookie and someone grabbed me. I was just trying to get the ball out of bounds."

Sam Mitchell tallied 22 points and Garnett had 18 and 13 rebounds as Minnesota snapped a two-game losing streak and concluded its road trip at 4-3. With 709 rebounds this season, Garnett eclipsed current Hawk Christian Laettner's team record of 708 set in the 1992-93 season.

"We've really been a fourth-quarter team and I think it shows a little bit about our character," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "Stephon came up big and made a lot of big plays down the stretch. We caught them off guard when we went small down the stretch. Mutombo had to guard Garnett."

Alan Henderson netted 20 points and Mutombo finished with 18 and 11 rebounds for Atlanta, which had won consecutive games and four of its last six. The Hawks had also won three in a row at home and 10 of their last 11.

Minnesota, which beat Atlanta 113-96 at home on January 27th, swept the season series for the first time in nine tries and won just its second game in Atlanta. The Hawks still hold a 13-5 lead in the all-time series.

Mutombo had 10 points at intermission as Atlanta held a 57-55 advantage. The margin was still tight at 68-67 with 4:37 to go in the third quarter before Henderson netted six points in a 9-2 run that closed the period and gave the Hawks a 77-69 cushion.

Blaylock's jumper opened the fourth quarter and gave Atlanta its largest lead. Henderson made a basket with 6:07 remaining to make it 89-82, but the Timberwolves came back with an 8-2 surge, closing within a point on Garnett's bucket with 2:57 left.

Porter tallied 15 points and Marbury had nine and 13 assists as Minnesota shot 40-of-80 from the floor and outrebounded the Hawks, 44-36. The Timberwolves remained in sole possession of the seventh position in the Western Conference playoff race.

Eldridge Recasner scored 16 points and Blaylock collected 15 and eight assists for Atlanta, which had its lead over Cleveland for the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference reduced to 1 1/2 games.

Recasner missed a foul shot just before the end of the first half to snap a string of 44 in a row. Mutombo became the 11th player in NBA history to record 2,000 career blocked shots in the second quarter.

"We were in a daze that last minute, it was like a dream," said Recasner. "We were winning the whole game handily and had the game in control. Marbury really didn't do anything the whole game and he came up with two big shots in the last minute. That's a tough loss for us at this point."
