Game Recap

Shaquille O'Neal poured in 35 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and the Los Angeles Lakers rallied from an 18-point third-quarter deficit to win their fifth straight game, a 105-103 overtime triumph over the reeling Detroit Pistons.

Nick Van Exel added 19 points for Los Angeles, which wrapped up its Eastern road swing at 4-0, the first time it has swept a four-game trip since the 1986-87 season, when it won the NBA championship. The Lakers have won 10 of their last 11 games overall and 16 of 18.

Van Exel and O'Neal scored four points apiece and Eddie Jones' three-point play capped an 11-2 run that evened the score at 93-93 with 1:56 to go in the fourth quarter. Brian Williams answered with a bank shot 60 seconds later to give the Pistons the lead, but Kobe Bryant hit two foul shots with 34 seconds left to make it 95-95.

"It's fine with me," said Bryant of taking the free throws. "That's what I live for. When they call you the money player, you also have to deal with the dog days, the days you won't come through."

Joe Dumars missed a jumper for Detroit with 12 seconds remaining and Van Exel was off with three seconds to go, forcing overtime.

Detroit assumed a three-point lead in the extra session after Grant Hill's two free throws, but Van Exel made consecutive layups to give Los Angeles its first lead of the game at 99-98 with 2:41 to play.

Detroit's Jerome Williams responded with a dunk 22 seconds later, but O'Neal had a follow slam with two minutes left to give the Lakers the lead for good. Jones dunked with 59 seconds remaining to make it a three-point game and Rick Fox made two of four foul shots in the final four seconds to hold off Detroit.

"We haven't been able to win games down the stretch," said Pistons interim coach Alvin Gentry. "We just can't make the necessary play to win the game, be it offensively or defensively. I feel bad because these guys are playing their hearts out. Playing hard is not the problem. We could have easily given up. We're not going to make the playoffs. For that to happen, everything would have to be perfect. But we'll continue to play hard til the end."

Los Angeles, which posted a 96-89 home win over Detroit on March 8th, has won nine of the last 10 meetings with the Pistons. The Lakers also have captured the last six contests in Detroit since a 112-93 setback on December 20th, 1991.

Brian Williams netted 26 points and Dumars 23 for Detroit, which dropped its season-high sixth straight game. Hill recorded his 27th career triple-double and third of the season with 18 points, a season high-tying 16 rebounds and 12 assists.

The Pistons extended an early 11-8 lead when Brian Williams and Jerome Williams each tallied six points in a 19-5 spurt that made it 30-13 with 62 seconds to go in the opening quarter. Brian Williams and Dumars combined for 28 points as Detroit held a 57-41 halftime advantage.

Lindsey Hunter scored the first basket of the third period to make it an 18-point game and the margin was 63-48 with 9:56 left before the Lakers came charging back with a 17-2 burst.

Derek Fisher netted all seven of his points and Jones had six in the run, including a layup with 5:21 to go that tied the score at 65-65. Detroit led 79-77 after three quarters and Dumars' jumper with 5:21 left in regulation capped a 6-0 spurt and made it 91-82.

"Two things we talked about at halftime other than the things we had to do was that the last game they (Pistons) lost, they were up 18 and gave it back," said Lakers coach Del Harris. "We knew they were capable of caving in and they would have that on their minds. Second, one of our players mentioned that we were down 20-something at Seattle and came back to tie. We talked about getting our body language up. Just getting what we had to in terms of defensive rebounding and let the offense come as it may."

Jones tallied 17 points and Fox added nine and nine rebounds for Los Angeles, which improved to 4-1 in overtime this season. The team shot 43 percent from the floor, including just 6-of-26 from three-point range.

"We came out real sluggish and they took advantage of it," said Van Exel. "But we showed our manhood and we made the comeback. We just wanted to come out (in the second half) more aggressive on defense and get them in a fastbreak game."

Jerome Williams totaled 13 points and 10 boards and Hunter had 13 points as Detroit made 6-of-12 three-point tries and won the rebounding battle, 52-46.

"It's discouraging, it's hard to put into words how it feels coming back to the locker room after giving your all and coming up short," said Jerome Williams. "We want to win and we are trying to do everything in our power to win, but in the back of our minds I hope we don't come away with a loss again. It's hard to compete thinking about something like that."
