Game Recap

Rod Strickland's third triple-double of the season was just enough to carry the Washington Wizards, who nearly blew an eight-point lead in the final 90 seconds but held on for a crucial 88-85 victory over the Orlando Magic.

Strickland had 21 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds in his third triple-double of the season, tying Phoenix Suns guard Jason Kidd and Detroit Pistons forward Grant Hill for the league lead. However, he and Chris Webber missed free throws in the closing seconds that gave the Magic two chances to tie.

Webber had 22 points, 12 rebounds and a big defensive play for the Wizards (38-37), who moved one game ahead of the Magic (37-38) into sole possession of ninth place in the Eastern Conference, one-half game out of the final playoff spot.

"We were playing for something today?" joked Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "They hung in there. The intensity was very, very high. We finally got aggressive."

"Every game counts now," Strickland said. "This was a must-win game today and we did it. Our offense wasn't there but we made up for it defensively. That's what won this one."

Nick Anderson scored 25 points for the Magic, who trailed by eight points with 1:26 to play but held the Wizards to one point thereafter. Orlando's third straight loss cost it a sweep of the four-game series, although it still holds the tiebreaker edge over Washington.

"The Wizards did what they had to do," magic coach Chuck Daly said. "I'm disappointed with the way things ended but we have a lot of heart and they showed what they were made of."

"Anything can happen," Anderson said. "All we have to do is keep playing our type of ball. The Wizards' schedule is now easier than ours. Experience may give us an edge. It's a matter of how bad you want it."

A layup by Strickland gave the Wizards the lead for good at 75-74 with 8:35 remaining. He added another layup 58 seconds later to extend the advantage to 79-74 and Washington appeared to seal the win when Tracy Murray's two free throws made it 87-79 with 1:26 to go.

"Strickland was a huge thorn in our side all game long," Daly said. "Washington has a lot of weapons they can use."

But the Wizards nearly collapsed. Derek Harper made his first foul shot and Derek Strong tipped in Harper's miss to cut the deficit to 87-82 with 1:01 left. Anderson's three-pointer made it a two-point game with 29 seconds remaining and the Magic had a chance to tie after Strickland made 1-of-2 from the line with 19 seconds to go.

But Bo Outlaw's inbounds pass was tipped by Webber, who corraled the deflection and was fouled. However, he missed both free throws, giving Orlando another chance. Harper's three-pointer missed with four seconds left and time expired.

Murray had 17 points, Juwan Howard added 12 and Calbert Cheaney 10 for the Wizards, who shot 47 percent (37-of-79) from the field and missed just one free throw until the final 20 seconds. Washington has won two in a row after a four-game skid.

"We went through this last year, so we know what we have to do now," Strickland said.

"We just won, that's what's important," Howard said. "Everything else is out the window. Every game is a must-win game now but we feel we'll be up to the challenge."

Horace Grant had 17 points and eight rebounds and Strong added 14 and nine for the Magic, who shot 42 percent (35-of-84) and held a 44-42 rebounding edge. Harper handed out 10 assists and Bo Outlaw grabbed 12 rebounds, although he committed eight of Orlando's 12 turnovers.

Grant, whose twin brother Harvey plays for the Wizards, scored 11 points in the first quarter as the Magic bolted to a 21-15 lead. Murray came off the bench to score 12 points in the second quarter as Washington surged to a 48-43 halftime lead.

Anderson scored 11 points in the third quarter as Orlando cut the deficit to 67-66 entering the final period.
