Game Recap

Michael Jordan scored 30 points and Ron Harper and Scottie Pippen keyed a pivotal run to open the second half as the Chicago Bulls won their league season-high 13th straight game, defeating the Washington Wizards, 103-85.

Chicago, which has won 13 straight for the first time since winning 18 in a row from December 29th, 1995 to February 2nd, 1996, moved within one victory of clinching its third straight Eastern Conference title.

Harper scored nine points and Pippen four in a 17-5 burst to open the second half, turning a three-point halftime lead into a 66-51 advantage with 6:36 left in the third quarter.

"The reason we were able to break the game open in the third quarter was that we started to shut them down defensively," Jordan said. "When we have our defense going, and we get teams in the fast-break, transition-type situation we are at our best."

Chris Webber scored 25 points on 11-of-13 shooting and Juwan Howard added 16 for the Wizards, who fell into a tie with the idle Orlando Magic, 1 1/2 games behind the New Jersey Nets for the final playoff spot in the East.

Webber and Howard were named in a sexual assault complaint in Washington, D.C. on Monday night. No charges have been filed and the players are expected to be questioned by police on Wednesday.

There was more bad news for the Wizards. Point guard Rod Strickland suffered a strained left quadricep midway through the second quarter and sat out the entire final period.

"There were no distractions in this game," said Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "We came out with good intensity. We just ran into a world championship team playing at the top of their game to start the third quarter."

"I was running and it felt like a charley horse," said Strickland. "They said it was a strain and not a pull. I'm going to be day by day and see what happens. I knew it was a problem because I had a pull in my hamstring earlier this season."

Dennis Rodman grabbed 20 rebounds and Dickey Simpkins scored a career-high 17 points off the bench for the Bulls, who made 54 percent (40-of-74) of their shots and held a 49-31 rebounding edge.

"Tonight we were able to dodge bullets," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. "Without Strickland in the second half the Wizards were a different team. They really could not function on offense which was big for us."

"This is not a statement game for us," added Simpkins. "I just tried to play my role aggressively. I need to prove myself so the coaches know I can be a help in the playoffs. The reason I was open so often was that Washington was trapping so much."

Pippen opened the second half with a steal and slam and Harper converted a fast-break opportunity. Calbert Cheaney countered with a hoop for Washington but Jordan dunked. Webber converted a three-point play, but a Pippen dunk ignited an 11-0 run capped by Harper's layup.

The Wizards never got within single digits after that and when they drew within 85-73 with 6:05 left in the contest, Chicago answered with a 13-3 run.

The Bulls seized a 30-20 edge at the end of a quarter by closing the first period on an 8-0 run. Jordan had the first four points before Simpkins scored the final four. But the Wizards opened the second quarter on a 22-8 burst that left them with a 42-28 advantage with 5:04 to go before halftime.

Webber had nine points in the second quarter and Strickland added six assists but suffered the injury running in transition. The game was knotted, 46-46, with 1:41 to go before a free throw by Pippen and a 20-footer by Jordan put the Bulls on top at the break, 49-46.

Chicago (59-17) is on the verge of its third straight 60-win season and has won nine straight games at the United Center, where it is a league-best 35-3 at home this season.
