Game Recap

Reggie Miller hit a 22-footer with 8.8 seconds remaining as the Indiana Pacers set a franchise record for victories and climbed into a tie for second place in the Eastern Conference with an 82-80 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Miller's shot came from the left wing after Shawn Kemp -- who was knocked unconscious in the first half and removed on a stretcher but started the second half -- made two free throws with 26 seconds to go.

The Cavaliers had a chance to tie the game, but Carl Thomas' jumper from the left baseline hit off the rim as time expired. Cleveland shot 75 percent (21-for-28) from the free-throw line.

"That's a shot I normally make in my sleep," Thomas said. "It's a carbon copy of what happened in a summer league game. I made it then."

Antonio Davis had 19 points and a season-high 15 rebounds and Miller added 15 points as Indiana (53-23) caught Miami for second place in the Eastern Conference with its fourth win in five games. Chris Mullin contributed 11 points for the Pacers, who have won four of the last five meetings with Cleveland. Indiana made 12-of-13 free throws (92 percent).

"I think this was a very important basketball game for us to win tonight," Davis said. "We stayed focused, made big plays and played good solid offense and defense. Both teams are very good basketball teams and we were the better one tonight. As far as not scoring as much as people think we should, we are working on that, but at this stage of the season, most of the teams know what we are doing."

"I'm very proud of these guys," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "We were 2-5, fought back, and this is kind of a milestone. It was a battle and we fought hard. They really wanted this one and I'm glad they got it."

Kemp was knocked unconscious after taking an elbow from Pacers forward Derrick McKey in the face in the second period. He left on a stretcher and wearing a neck stabilizer but returned and finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Wesley Person scored 18 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 17 and seven rebounds for Cleveland, which lost for just the second time in eight games. The Cavs remained in sixth place in the East, 2 1/2 games ahead of the New York Knicks.

The Pacers led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, taking a 72-62 advantage when Jalen Rose made an 18-footer with 10:54 remaining. Kemp had a layup to trigger a 10-0 burst and his free throw cut the deficit to 76-71 with 4:51 to go. Thomas hit a three-pointer 37 seconds later and a three-pointer by person with 3:57 remaining gave Cleveland a 77-76 edge, its first lead since the first period. Kemp sank one free throw to cap the run with 3:09 left.

"I think this was a solid NBA game," Rose said. "We both played like we both wanted to win this one. I like the fact that we played from start to finish. I continue to come off the bench and try to make things happen because I love to play."

Antonio Davis made two free throws with 70 seconds to play to tie the game, 78-78, and the Pacers took the lead 35 seconds later when Dale Davis did the same.

Miller scored seven points and Mullin added six as the Pacers took a 26-19 lead after the first quarter. Ilgauskas converted a three-point play to pull Cleveland within 34-30 with 6:03 left in the second quarter.

Indiana scored the next seven points to take a 41-30 advantage when Rose dunked with 4:03 to go in the first half. The Pacers held a 47-39 lead at the break.

Indiana took its biggest lead when Miller hit a 16-foot running jumper to make it 59-47 with 5:50 left in the third quarter. Cleveland scored the final four points of the period to cut the deficit to 69-62 when Person converted two free throws with four seconds left.
