Game Recap

Alonzo Mourning in a protective facial mask did not intimidate Kevin Garnett, who collected 27 points and 14 rebounds and made a key defensive play as the Minnesota Timberwolves held off the Miami Heat, 92-89.

The return of Mourning just one week after he suffered a broken left cheekbone and P.J. Brown from a seven-game absence with a sprained ankle was not enough to prevent Miami from falling into a tie with the Indiana Pacers (53-23) for second place in the Eastern Conference.

Already one of the NBA's most forceful players, Mourning wore a blue-rimmed plastic mask that covered all of his upper face except for a hole for his eyes. He collected 28 points and nine rebounds in his usual physical style, shooting 9-of-18 from the field and making 10-of-16 free throws.

"I got a little light-headed," Mourning said. "I got a little dizzy, but that's still no excuse. It's uncomfortable and it makes me dizzy. The doctor warned me that once you get your blood level up you're going to get those symptoms."

"Other than probably his wind -- he didn't get his wind back -- I thought he did a very good job," Heat coach Pat Riley said.

But that was not enough to scare Garnett, who scored six points in the final 4:11 and saved the game with a deflection of an inbounds pass on Miami's final possession. Minnesota beat Miami for just the second time in the last 11 meetings.

"That was as close to a playoff game as you can get before the playoffs," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We played really hard."

A dunk by Mourning gave Miami a 77-74 lead with 10:44 remaining but Minnesota used a 10-1 run to take the lead for good. Terry Porter scored four points in the burst, including a jumper that made it 84-78 with 6:54 to play.

A three-pointer by Dan Majerle closed the deficit to 84-82 with 4:27 to go, but Garnett responded with consecutive hoops to open the lead to six points with 2:35 to play.

Brown and Majerle had transition dunks to again pull the Heat within a hoop with 1:11 left. This time Garnett answered with a tip-in 19 seconds later.

Miami hurt itself with missed free throws. Brown went 1-of-2 from the line on consecutive trips, leaving Minnesota with a 90-88 lead with 11 seconds left. Porter made two free throws with 7.4 seconds to go and Mourning was fouled with 4.8 seconds remaining.

Mourning made the first and missed the second and Garnett tapped the rebound out of bounds. Miami inbounded from the baseline to the top of the circle, but Garnett deflected the pass into the backcourt. It went out of bounds with 1.7 seconds left and the Heat could not get off a shot.

"We notoriously fold against big and strong teams," Saunders said. "Tonight we hung in and battled. I'm proud as hell of what the guys did. It was a big win."

Stephon Marbury had 18 points and a season-high 16 assists and Porter scored 13 points for the Timberwolves, who shot 42 percent (39-of-93) and held a 49-43 rebounding edge. Minnesota committed just eight turnovers.

"Kevin Garnett had a huge game and Stephon played really well running the offense," Saunders said.

"He was very good tonight," Riley said of Garnett. "We did a good job on him last time, but he (played) very long tonight. He had eight offensive rebounds and was making his comfort jumper. He made a big, big tip for them on the second shot."

Tim Hardaway scored 16 points and Voshon Lenard added 14 for the Heat, who shot 41 percent (33-of-81) and committed 11 turnovers. Brown had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Mourning wasted no time showing the mask would not affect his play, scoring the first basket of the game. He scored 10 points in the first quarter as Miami grabbed a 29-28 lead.

"That's my game," Mourning said. "It's difficult for me to start shying away from contact. I just went out there and tried to play my game and not let it distract me."

Garnett and Marbury scored eight points apiece in the second quarter as the Wolves took a 53-32 halftime edge. Hardaway had 10 points in the third period as the Heat surged back in front, 73-72, entering the final 12 minutes.
