Game Recap

Clyde Drexler scored 20 points and Emanual Davis had six straight points in a 10-0 burst early in the second quarter as the Houston Rockets snapped a six-game losing streak with a 104-87 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Hakeem Olajuwon added 18 points and Brent Price 13 for the Rockets, who avoided their longest skid since dropping seven straight from March 16th-30th, 1996.

Houston, which remained two games behind seventh-place Minnesota in the Western Conference, broke open an 18-17 contest with 10 straight points, capped by a three-pointer and three straight free throws by Davis.

"They have good, young players with bouncy legs," said Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "It wasn't a 17-point game. Emanual was outstanding. I'll admit it, I was apprehensive about this game. This game was a confidence-builder."

Cory Alexander scored 19 points and Danny Fortson added 15 for the Nuggets (9-67), who must win once in their remaining six games to avoid matching the NBA's worst single-season record. That distinction belongs to the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, who were 9-73.

Denver has dropped four straight overall and five in a row to Houston.

"As our luck would have it they got everyone healthy to play us," said Nuggets coach Bill Hanzlik. "They make it really tough on you. You have to guard their post game as well as their great three-point shooters. We just couldn't get the upper hand."

"Every game right now is the best opportunity," Alexander said, referring to the record. "They have three of the top 50 players on one team, it makes it very tough."

Neither team was able to open much of an advantage in the opening quarter as Denver shot 30 percent and Houston 37 percent. The Rockets led 18-17 with 21 seconds left in the quarter when Kevin Willis hit a layup to close the period.

Price sank a driving layup 38 seconds into the second quarter and Davis followed with a three-pointer. He was fouled attempting a three-pointer and made all three free throws for a 28-17 lead with just over 10 minutes left.

The Nuggets were unable to draw closer than seven points the rest of the half. Houston made 9-of-14 shots in the period and held a 10-5 rebounding edge. Davis and Price had eight points apiece in the quarter.

Anthony Goldwire's layup with 3:24 left in the third quarter cut Denver's deficit to 60-57 but Matt Maloney hit a running jumper and Willis had a tip-in. After a basket by Bryant Stith temporarily halted the spurt, Drexler buried a three-pointer and Maloney sank a layup for a 69-59 advantage.

Alexander's dunk with 8:18 left in the fourth quarter got Denver within 82-75 but Olajuwon hit two free throws and Charles Barkley buried a three-pointer to push the lead back to 12.

Denver did not fold and a free throw by Alexander again brought the Nuggets within seven. But Barkley hit a free throw and Drexler converted a fast-break layup. Price, Drexler and Barkley drained two free throws apiece to seal the victory.

"We were hitting the shots tonight," said Price. "We knew they might try to pressure us and we turned it over a lot. Denver's a talented team, their record doesn't show it."
