Game Recap

Nick Anderson scored 26 points and Derek Strong added 20 and 10 rebounds as the Orlando Magic kept pace in the Eastern Conference playoff race with a 95-87 victory over the Detroit Pistons, who have dropped seven straight games.

Strong scored four points during a pivotal 10-4 run midway through the fourth quarter that turned a one-point deficit into an 89-84 lead. Kevin Ollie also came off the bench and hit a pair of crucial jumpers during the run.

The victory kept the Magic within 1 1/2 games of New Jersey for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth. The Nets defeated Boston, 117-104.

"This was a very competitive game," said Orlando coach Chuck Daly. "We came out flat and then we started to compete and we were able to fight our way back in the first half. ... The bottom line is that we worked hard enough to win. It was a terrific game for us and a great win."

Lindsey Hunter scored 20 points and Joe Dumars added 17 for the Pistons, who own the second-worst road record in the Eastern Conference at 11-27. Grant Hill had 15 points, five rebounds and nine assists but was just 5-of-13 from the field.

"Unfortunately, we aren't playing for a playoff position, but we have to continue to show pride," said Hunter. "It really hurts when you lose these close games, because we have lost so many."

"Lindsey played great," said Pistons coach Alvin Gentry. "It's the same old thing. We give up 13 offensive rebounds and they got 23 second-chance points."

Second-year forward Don Reid had 16 points, 15 rebounds and five assists -- all career highs for Detroit, which was just 34-of-81 (42 percent) from the field.

A goaltending call on Bo Outlaw gave the Pistons an 80-79 lead with 8:10 left in the contest. But Ollie hit an 18-footer with 7:42 to go and, after a pair of Detroit misses, Anderson converted a layup for an 83-80 advantage.

Hunter buried an 18-footer to bring Detroit within a point but Ollie sank an 18-footer with 6:10 to go. After an exchange of misses, Dumars hit a jumper to cut the Pistons deficit to 85-84 with 4:35 remaining. But Strong hit a finger roll and, after a turnover by former Magic center Brian Williams, he added a hook shot in the lane for an 89-84 lead with 3:16 left.

"I know that a lot of times, I'm put in the situation where I'm kind of forced to take shots," said Strong, who had 10 of his 20 in the fourth. "If I don't, I'll definitely hear it the next time out."

The teams traded empty possessions before two free throws by Hunter brought Detroit within 89-86 with 80 seconds to go. But Horace Grant drained a 16-footer with 41 seconds left and Detroit would get no closer the rest of the way.

Detroit made just six of 23 shots in the final 12 minutes as Hunter had 10 of the team's 15 points. The Pistons were just 14-of-41 from the field in the second half.
